My DS is starting year 7 in September and I'm not quite sure about leaving him to fend for himself after school and during holidays while we're at work. He really doesn't want to carry on going to the childminders as he's getting bored and he's the oldest there by far.

What do others do? It seems that some of the holiday clubs and such like are just aimed at primary ages and don't cover the over 12s.

My DCs go to a Village College where there is an after-school club, you pay per session and they get to hang out, watch films, play games and hopefully do their homework. Mine loved it (now too old so not needed). In holidays, i paid a Uni student to look after them in our house. Expensive, but they were much happier.

My ds has just finished year 7 and lots of his friends have done different activities - maybe just for a half day, but means they are not alone all day. Things like climbing at Kelsey Kerridge, hockey camp, summer orchestra. Different things each week. Think they take themselves to and from. Depends how late you work wether this would work I guess.

Thanks all. I posted on the Mumsnet forum too and I think the conclusion I've come to is that during term time he can stay on at school until 5pm and do his homework and/or participate in the after school clubs. He'll just have become v. social, v. quickly!

Holidays though. I can't find anything being promoted for October half-term in Cambridge and it's not that far away. I'm sure he'll we could find a tennis/football club to send him too but the ones I've seen tend to run 10-4 or 9-3 ish which don't suit working hours. My DS can't find the end of the garden never mind get himself anywhere in Cambridge! Grin

I'm going to take some deep breaths and let him find his feet, some nice friends and a social life! (OMG!!!!)
