Best?
? Thing about the area
the city centre has all been recently revamped and is clean and pedestrian friendly.

? Child-friendly café
Dunno.

? Child-free night out
I like café vaudeville and the merchant hotel. Plenty of nice places to eat - 21social, James Street South, Salt Bistro, Made in Belfast, The Cloth Ear, The Apartment. We get a lot of big artists at the odyssey now which can be a good night out.

? Outside space
Has to be Botanic Gardens. Or Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon park. Or the Lagan towpath at Shaws Bridge.

? Hidden gem
Walking up on black mountain.

? Community venues
Dunno! what is a community venue?

? Free visitor attraction
Ulster Museum.

? Day out
for kids its got to be w5. the opera house have fantastic shows.

? Places to live
Dunno. Don't live in Belfast!

? Paces to shop
Victoria Square, city centre generally as pretty much everything is available without walking for miles.

I'll have a think for some more positives.

Thanks Squirted, that's a great start!

We're doing Community Venues (not really sure what that is either) because listing best schools was too fraught in this town! That's what most sites of the week do.

Squirted · 15/08/2013 17:14

you might have the same problem with community venues too!

Tee2072a · 15/08/2013 17:20

I know, we may skip that one for Belfast!

I'm still trying to think of free things to do.

Visit Stormont?

www.niassembly.gov.uk/Visit-and-Learning/Visiting/Tours/

Theres a really good play park there, suitable for little ones and bigger ones. It has a big zip line.

Squirted · 15/08/2013 17:30

oops sorry about the link there

Squirted · 15/08/2013 17:31

ffs.

Visit Stormont

Tee2072a · 15/08/2013 17:34

That's a good one. Keep 'em coming, doing my job for me! Grin

Are you coming to our meet up on 30th? Ground at Next at City Centre? Sorry, I'm horrible about screen names, you could have already been to one or more...

Belfast Castle? Nice grounds and food is good in the bar / restaurant.

St Georges Market? Foods good there too.

Is there a theme here? Smile

Tee2072a · 15/08/2013 17:53

A hidden gem might be the Crown Bar. Unusual in that its a working pub owned by the National Trust. And it is pretty on the inside.

Thing about the area - City Centre, schools, parks

Child friendly cafe - Little Wing (not quite a cafe, but I dont take my 3 to cafes - the youngest can wreak havoc)

Child free night out - Barking Dog - Malone Road, St Annes Square incl Potted Hen, 4th Wall, that nice new Italian, Zen, 21 Social, The Chelsea, Lillies - Lisburn Road, McHughs, Northern Whig.

Outside Space - Lady Dixon, Waterworks, Falls Park, Custom House Square

Hidden gem - cafe in the Lyric, Garrick Bar, Empire Bar, Duke of York

Free Visitor attraction - St Georges Market, Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens. Stormont and adjacent playground Mo Mowlam Memorial Pk

Day Out - Belfast Zoo, W5, Titanic Museum (I havent been but I know some people who've been pleasantly surprised - not for the under 7s), Open Top Bus Tour. There are obviously loads outside Belfast ie Bangor, Carrickfergus

justupthebend · 19/08/2013 07:36

Hidden gems - Clonard Monastry, Linenhall Library

Outside Space - Belvoir Forest Park

Tee2072a · 19/08/2013 10:45

Thanks justupthebend!

Okay, here's what I have so far. My deadline is Thursday, so you have until then to change my mind!!

Best?
? Thing about the area ? Everything! Whether the newly revamped City Centre which is very pedestrian friendly or the beginning of the addition of gates in the Peace Wall and the park improvements from that, Belfast is a rapidly growing place with friendly people and lots to see and do.
? Child-friendly café ? Ground at Next has lots of toys for various ages and a fenced off bit where you can let your child have a crawl while you have a coffee.
? Child-free night out ? The Apartment, The Merchant Hotel, a concert at the Odyssey. Can?t really pick just one!
? Outside space ? Musgrave Park is our firm favourite in our family with its massive sand pit and diggers!
? Hidden gem ? The Crown Bar, which is a National Trust Property and a pub all in one!
? Schools (primary and secondary) - feel free to choose COMMUNITY VENUES if schools is too much of an issue ? Errrr?
? Free visitor attraction ? Ulster Museum with dinosaurs and gems and life in Northern Ireland all in one place.
? Day out ? Belfast Castle. Great outdoor space and a castle!
? Places to live ? This is really hard to answer as each area of the city, North, South, East and West have their own unique qualities. I live in South Belfast so I think it?s best, but if you asked someone in each of the other areas they?ll say the same!
? Paces to shop ? City Centre, Victoria Square

Best?
? Thing about the area
Access to mountains/sea/fields/river/city centre - everything you damn well need in one bite sized little place

? Child-friendly cafe
I don't frequent many child friendly cafes but given the local meets are in Next I think it's a fair do that we promote them :)

? Child-free night out
No votes for late night art then :( free wine, a guided tour, local artists & lots of culture. And free wine. (in case it got missed the first time)

? Outside space
Botanic park for me - my local, love the squirrels, bunnies & the fact you can hide in the tropical ravine, palm house or museum if it rains

? Hidden gem
Lagan tow path - bike, walk, feed the ducks, spot the tiddlers, climbing trees, picnicking, or just stuffing your face at nearby cutters (with added bonus of a swift half)

? Community venues/Schools
Crescent Arts Centre (they hire me a lot so fair dos on the bias there) dance, arts, theatre, book clubs, poetry rumbles, life drawing (of course - takes a bow) as well as so many other things I can't even start.

Schools - Sorry, I tried, I really did but I feel I can't recommend without pointing out the downsides, namely money & religion. So best probably to leave this one out - maybe folks could recommend good pre-school or play-groups or groups that run outside of school like sports clubs (erm? maybe not) ::minefield:: Grin

? Free visitor attraction
Ulster Museum vote here too (tho inching ahead with the tropical ravine if you have small kids with active 'dinosaur-orientated' imaginations)

? Day out
When DS was little, Botanic park et al (museum, cafe, picnic, swings blah blah blah). Bit older the towpath for a bit of tree climbing, tiddler spotting, duck feeding etc. Nowadays - special events in Queen's or W5 - mostly science related.

? Places to live
With you on South Belfast Tee maybe not exactly where I am now but certainly not to far. In all the years I've been in Belfast I have never lived more than 2miles from where I do now. Having said that a very good friend lives in Knocknagoney & his place is lovely - with Stormount not too far.

? Places to shop
No Alibis for books - hands down David is the most lovely man & rarely a thing he doesn't know about books. I also like Nutmeg in city centre for when I feel a hennaed hair blast from school vibe hit me. Clothes I do have a fondness for TK Maxx since I went in after a whole day's shopping without a sausage and discovered 3 beautiful outfits in one trip to the changing rooms, tho I do like a wander thru Vic Sq ::deliberately has forgotten name of lovely designer I craved last time::

SacreBlue · 20/08/2013 14:36

Oh - as if essay wasn't enough - restaurants being my specialist subject. Villa Italia & Scalinis are lovely with kids - as is Sakura.

Bourbon at Queen's has a good mixed menu that the teens I know love, cutters is best for lunch (dinner, esp at weekends can be a bit crowded)

Barking Dog (just your post inspired this second diatribe) is lovely for romantic night - as is actually Horatio Todds tho I would steer more towards a group meal there.

Conors near the Museum, Maggie Mays or Graffiti for hangover breakfasts.

Common Grounds for a hot choc (and they they do a nice community Christmas which even with my heathen tendencies is not too religion heavy)

Best work lunch Sole Seafood, Lisburn Rd - main for less than a tenner & the guys are as lovely as the food. Yellow Door on Lisburn Rd btw is fabulous for spotting fit rugby types if such is your want - but not good for getting a seat at weekday lunchtimes.

I haven't had lunch yet. I think I may be delirious. I'll stop there.

Tee2072a · 25/08/2013 08:52

Thanks for the help everyone, it's been submitted and will be up this week.

Also, don't forget: Coffee meet up this coming Friday, 30th Aug, 1030, Ground at Next!
