Cost of living and schooling in england

My hubby has received his offer for employment with a figure that in Australia would not add up to a comfortable living standard and room to save... But I'm unsure about England ?

I am also looking for a general figure on schooling. It would be a min of 5 years in UK so my two children would have to start school... What is the cost of private and public??? Any clues are greatly appreciated...

there is free education in england and you can pay as much as you want for private. I don't know about quality but the names of some private schools in the area are The Downs at wraxall, bristol grammar, QEH, Red maids,Badminton, Clifton College, I can't think of any more.
Uniforms are available online for some at John Lewis.com. I don't know if thats any help?

Education is only "free" from reception onwards i.e. the school year that a child turns five. Most schools in the UK have school uniform so you would have to budget for that.
Pre-school education from 3 years onwards only has limited funding and is only funded for part-time (15 hours a week) so if you need a full-time place you would need to pay the rest! It is a while since my children were at this stage though so I may be out of date.
Bristol is a fairly expensive place to live - if you are renting a 3 bed house you would be paying approx £800 per month in most areas of Bristol slightly less if you could manage with 2 bedrooms. As the UK is colder than Australia heating costs would be higher - £1000+ a year is now typical. There would also be council tax £100+ per month in addition to rent and also water bills (we pay £20 per month but we have a meter).

Hadn't thought to tell you what other costs were with regard to bills, We are in a small town just outside Bristol,( very desirable they say!!Smile)I own my own place but DS Pays 1100 a month for good sized 4 bed.
Gas about £50 a month, elec £60, council tax£249,water £60, Food £100.TV licence£12. phone/broadband £50. house contents ins.£25,
Obviously running a car is another big expense as fuel here isn't cheap either!!

Food is £100 a week not monthly like other costs!!

Hello everybody!

This is not my thread, but I am interested in the same questions so this has helped me too.

One question that I have myself is that where can I find a house to rent from? So far I have found only 2 sites. And many of their flats & houses are meant for students. I am looking for a family home with 3 bedrooms.

cjel · 18/07/2013 09:09

I don't know where you are but here I can google Houses to rent in.... and a couple of good sights come up .( I think your move or right move) seem to have most covered but alterantively try estate agents for the area you want.

MotherTree · 19/07/2013 13:19

Thank you cjel! I hadn't seen the sites you mentioned. Rightmove has many options, very nice.
