Moving to Cambridge and not sure where to set up home

hi, I am currently living in Melbourne and may be returning to the UK to live in Cambridge. I've no idea where the good places are to live. I have 2 boys, aged 4 and 1 so need access to good schools. My partner will be working at Addenbrooks so we need to be reasonably close. I'm not fussed about living in the city but at the same time don't want to live anywhere too remote. Good access to the city would help and it would be good to be near good parks, swimming pool etc. Any suggestions welcome thanks.

Hi RandF do you have a budget? Looking to rent or buy?

northofcambridge · 20/05/2013 16:16

Chesterton - Yes that was I going to ask!
Have a look on rightmove.co.uk to get an idea of costs
There a few threads about areas below
Schools - most primary schools in Cambridge and in surrounding villages are good - some will not have places however - your DS would I imagine due to start reception in September

Addenbrooks is very easily reached from a very wide area -loads of buses, cycling etc

would you be working? if not then one of the larger villages - perhaps with a village college that has a swimming pool might work and be cheaper?

Depending on your budget, there are hundreds of new houses being built a stone throw away from Addenbrookes in Trumpington. Not everyone's cup of tea but I believe that the local primary is excellent and location wise you can get into the centre very easily by public transport.
Trumpington Meadows
Great Kneighton
Long Road development

Brilliant thank you. Looking to rent to start off with and a larger village would be much more my cup of tea and somewhere small. i will work eventually but would look to get the family settled first.

Given the rental market - expensive and fast moving - it may be a bit more where can you find something decent for a price you can afford when you move -it was partly for us when we moved anyway - most of the large villages are pretty good - its just if you both end up working in Addenbrookes/Cambridge just makes life easier if you both don't have a long commutte

You could try Sawston if you're looking for a large village on the right side of town to Addenbrookes. It's one M11 exit away, then with the new Addenbrookes road he wouldn't need to get into Cambridge traffic.

ChestertonCharley · 22/05/2013 11:12

Second MarronGlace. You can commute to Addenbrookes by bike from Sawston, Great Shelford or Stapleford. Linton might be worth a look too.

Cantusemyusualnickname · 23/05/2013 10:25

Linton definitely worth considering as is a large village with good amenities: Nurseries/playgroups and schooling from Reception to Year 11 all in the village. There's plenty of family sized property available to rent. Also a reasonable amount of open space in the village including areas with play equipment, though no swimming pool.
I wouldn't recommend cycling to Addenbrookes from there (it would be about 8 miles) as there isn't a cycle path all the way, but the route is direct along A1307 and you can drive (possibly using P&R at Babraham Road for car parking if not available on site) or take direct half hourly bus.

Does anybody know of a good cleaner in the Petersfield area please?

Try one of the villages to the West : www.pe196rx.co.uk/index.html
