Chat thread for Dundee MNetters - come and say hello

TeaAndTunnocks · 13/01/2013 14:34

Hello, I thought it would be good to have a place where we could introduce ourselves, and find out where we are all based (in a very general way, please don't post addresses or phone numbers on the board).

I am based in the West End, and am mum of two kids, my daughter is 10yo and my son is 8yo. I am a freelance writer and blogger. I am the Local Editor of Mumsnet Dundee, so if you have any questions about Mumsnet, feel free to PM me (private message).

For those who are completely new to MN, I wanted to add some basic advice on Mumsnet and how to find your way around.

To begin with, here is the acronym list and the Frequently Asked Questions - do have a read through them to find your feet.

Mumsnet is a site for parents, and we do allow people to speak their minds, so if you ask a question you will get an honest answer - sometimes it might be too honest for you, especially if you post in Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU). Personal attacks are however not allowed, so if someone is mean to you, report it to MNHQ. (this is aimed at usage of the main site, not so much in Local, where I hope things will be more local based fun than bun fights!).

If you are new to Mumsnet, do have a look around but lurk on AIBU and chat till you find your feet and know what we are about.

Finally, I will say that although this may sound as if we are a scary bunch, we are also incredibly supportive. To get an idea of what we can achieve when we get together, check out the Woolly Hugs website, where MNetters show the blankets they have made for MNetters who have lost a child or a husband.

We must have been hard core then, Merrydown with no mixer. Grin

God the thought of it now makes me shudder.

Looking forward to a meet up and will keep an eye on the thread.

Soup in a bag is brilliant. I made a spicy veg soup from one and it was delicious. Pretty much anything that's nice and easy but doesn't involve horses is great.

TeaAndTunnocks · 08/02/2013 16:46

Would you be a love and C&P that comment onto the Listing. It made me laugh.

Probably better to go without the blackcurrant. We gave my 15yo cousin a couple of pints on my henny night and my aunt's carpet never recovered.

here is the listing to save you searching

When do your guests arrive?

OP posts:
BalgayHill · 08/02/2013 16:57

Done.

They'll be here in about half an hour. I still haven't cleaned the bathroom. I'm trying to watch the Good Wife, read and MN which is slowing me down a bit.

TeaAndTunnocks · 08/02/2013 17:14

GO AND CLEAN THE LOO

My grandparents used to live on the side of Balgay Hill! In Saggar Street...in the coldest house known to humankind Grin it was a long time ago though!

TandT I do have my uses, but fortunately for the dog it's just plain green, and not quite what you were imagining! I've actually just asked the Dundee Mn head honcho on FB where on the local site I should blab about what I do-fingers crossed there will be an appropriate place and I can prove to the husband that al the faffing about I do is profitable rather than costing us!

TeaAndTunnocks · 11/02/2013 20:54

That would be me, the MN Head Honcho :)

I might as MNHQ if I can have business cards made up with that on it.

How did your weekend go? Guests all happy?

We had a fun filled weekend, with a disappearing doggie and a distraught daughter. Pooch escaped on Sat evening and by the time I thought to call the police, she'd been moved to Brown Street. They are closed all weekend, so we weren't able to pick her up till this morning.

She hasn't moved from her spot by the heater all day. Think it was a bit chilly in Brown Street :(

OP posts:
BalgayHill · 11/02/2013 22:17

Oh no, that's horrible. Hope your DD and the dog are recovering.

Guests were quite happy ( I think ), loo was shining bright. Grin

We've had a lovely, long weekend. Just wish it was a whole week but possibly that's just being greedy.

I'm half watching Robin Hood with Russell Crowe at the moment - it's so bad it's good. The accents are hilarious.

Just got my fingers crossed for no more snow this week.

TeaAndTunnocks · 12/02/2013 15:56

I was just saying to cousin who lived down saaaaaaaaaarf, that their half-term is much better than ours. Wish we got a week off rather than a long weekend.

Glad that your guests were fun.

I am spending the afternoon at the hairdressers, so watch for a review later. I'm having a hair straightening treatment done - it is more smoothing than straightening actually. I had it done last year and loved it. It is a long time to sit though, cause I am having the colour and cut done at the same time.

OP posts:
BalgayHill · 12/02/2013 18:21

I would love to have a straightening treatment done. My hair is really curly and I waste hours straightening it. Where are you getting it done?

TeaAndTunnocks · 12/02/2013 20:06

At McIntyres. It cost me a fortune today, but that was with cut and colour too. It is this system although I didn't pay £200. Not sure what the Kebelo alone was, but I think about £160. Officially it lasts about 3 months, but I would say it lasted a lot longer than that. I had it done last June and I would say that it was fine till about end of October, then gradually got less smooth. That might be because my hair is reasonably straight, with just a slight wave.

OP posts:
BalgayHill · 13/02/2013 07:48

I really must get a proper haircut. I've been hacking at it myself for ages. I'm not sure exactly why but I'm pretty scared of the hairdresser - no bad experience but just really don't enjoy it.

It's bloody snowing here again. Anyone else?

TeaAndTunnocks · 13/02/2013 09:12

I really like McIntyres, it is trendy without being scary, if you know what I mean. The staff are really friendly. I like it when a salon has the same staff over a long time - you feel like they must be good to their staff and they enjoy working there. One salon I used to go to in Germany was horrible - the boss stalked around sniping at people and being sarcastic about their work. The woman who cut my hair was lovely but I couldn't stand being around her boss.

She eventually opened her own salon and took all her customers with her, and a couple of the staff :)

Yes, snowing here too. Loads of it. Forecast to be 8degrees tomorrow.

Anyone know where the degree sign is on a UK keyboard?

I am hoping there are some lurkers out there, wondering if they should join in the chat.

Don't be shy, just jump in.

OP posts:
WrongSideoftheBridge · 13/02/2013 10:17

I'll jump in. Am currently sitting in my jammies, really bored! DD is making a tent and DS is playing on his mat. I am surplus to requirements already.

The best haircut I've ever had was last summer at Suzanne Duncan. It sat perfectly for months and everybody commented on it. And it was with a Groupon voucher too.

TeaAndTunnocks · 13/02/2013 10:52

I am wasting time on MN when I should be doing something, but the snow is laming me

OP posts:
TeaAndTunnocks · 13/02/2013 11:00

Er. I wasn't even finished posting. What happened there?

It is really snowing heavily here. Please tell me that the other side of the bridge has some snow too. I feel bad that you lot don't get any

OP posts:
WrongSideoftheBridge · 13/02/2013 14:47

Yes, plenty today!!

We were going to see a (possible) new house but the vendor has cancelled. On the upside, it doesn't look like I'll be able to get to Weightwatchers...

I hate this username! I thought I read somewhere we can use our usual names on local now?

BalgayHill · 13/02/2013 18:10

I might PM you TandT and get the name of your stylist - it might sound like I know what I'm talking about!

Snow has been so bad today. I work at the other end of town from where I live and ended up having to get a bus home. Pretty scary, it was skidding and sliding when it was trying to stop.

Hope everyone else is home safely.

TeaAndTunnocks · 14/02/2013 11:04

Annoying for you, Otherside. Can you see the house a different day?

There are no fewer than 4 houses in our scheme on the market at the moment. One of them seems to have been repossessed and is being sold by a finance company for at least £30k under normal asking price for similar houses. Weirdly, the survey is very low too - am sure there is something dodgy about it. It has new kitchen, bathroom, flooring etc.

Wonder why the owners didn't sell it themselves. It went on the market and was immediately under offer. Not surprising at that price.

I think MNHQ can change the username for you, if you PM them.

Snow is almost gone now, just a lot of slush and dirt. We saw 2 cars stuck in the ditch and one small accident when we were on our way home from school yesterday. I walked rather than take the car out.

carnoustiemum · 19/02/2013 09:20

hello, I'm a carnoustie mummy of two beautiful (and slightly exhausting) girls. Always looking for things to do to amuse them, so this site is so important! It's amazing how many places you discover about that no one's ever told you about! Currently have a four year old leaning over me so she can go on cbeebies site! The joys! Also a kitten jumping on me, someone remind me why I got a kitten again, seemed like a good idea at the time......Any tips on keeping a 6 month old, 4 year old and a badly behaved kitten, gratefully received!

TeaAndTunnocks · 21/02/2013 18:37

Hi Carnoustiemum,

I remember just after we got our puppy thinking WHY THE HELL DID I DO THIS? but it did get better.

How are you all doing? Did you read about that poor girl who was assaulted last night? Not far from my house, so a bit scary.

OP posts:
Pehsandbridies · 21/02/2013 20:49

Hello, all well here!

So scary about the girl, and a wee boy has gone missing from his home too. Just awful.

TeaAndTunnocks · 21/02/2013 22:39

Hadn't heard about the wee boy, Peh. Where was that then? How awful.
