Hello everyone! I am currently living in the USA (previously Whalley Range/Chorlton), and moving back at the end of August to start a Doctorate at the University of Manchester. We are keen to start afresh in a new area of Manchester, and Altrincham/Hale/Sale seems like its gonna be the place!! We liked Chorlton, but fancy living a little more out, on the tramline. We have an 8 year old daughter so looking for school recommendations and also areas where is best to rent. Are there any council estate areas to avoid? Obviously we have a lot to sort out in the next couple weeks, so any advice or help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks
Rachael

The houses on Lawrence Road are gorgeous and packed with character, however, when we viewed it pre kids my mum recommended we avoid, as the stairs are so very steep, if you have LO's they will struggle.

Seems a moot point but worth considering - also the gardens are postage stamp size - other than that they are lovely country cottagey type town houses.

York St is excellent for access to Alti and Hale and in catchment for Stamford Park

rachococo · 09/08/2012 01:53

Thanks everyone, my friend is viewing Lawrence Street on Friday and maybe Marsland (not sure which number it is yet). The other rentals are like hot potatoes they get snapped up so quick!! I have 2 weeks so starting to worry...

Lawrence Rd is right in the middle of it all, you have John Leigh Park a stones throw away (gorgeous huge park), and 10-15 min walk to Alti town centre, about another 10-15 min walk to Nav Rd tram station.

Marsland Rd is Sale, i dont know it well but still near enough to Alti

Fingers crossed!

Thanks, a cottage has just come available for rent, it is Station Cottages

Manchester Rd, West Timperley, Altrincham, Greater Manchester WA14 5PB. What is this area like?

Thanks!!

If it's where I think it is it's on a very busy main road and I'd try and stick to Lawrence road if you can. Manchester road is the main commuting road into Manchester and is always busy but particularly horrendous at rush hour.

It's a shame you missed out on colwick - I was looking forward to welcoming you ....

rachococo · 09/08/2012 21:13

It is a shame about Colwick, it went the same day it was put on, I am running out of options and need to get it sorted by next week to get a school sorted for my daughter and flights back booked. Talk about last minute!!! I think the Station Cottage is on the main Road, I am hoping it is near the tram, I won't have a car anyway, and it seemed near Navigation Road Primary, Park Road Primary. My friend is viewing Lawrence Rd and Station Cottage tomorrow, this renting is so cut throat that if I can't get Lawrence Rd I may snap up Station Cottage so I can finally get things sorted!!! Any other advice much appreciated though, I am feeling slightly desparate!!!!
Thanks

I don't think station cottage is that close to the tram - I think it's a reference to the old disused railway line it backs on to. Probably a good 15 or 20 minutes walk to navigation road and further to Timperley station. Lawrence road similar or shorter distance to navi road (depending on which end) but more pleasant route! Also closer to Alty town centre and nice park. Good luck Smile

Re colwick - I saw a couple loitering outside it on Sunday obviously waiting for a viewing but the agent didn't turn up - now I know why! (I was in the car waiting for my sleeping dd to wake up)

rachococo · 09/08/2012 21:38

Thanks - fingers crossed for Lawrence Rd tomorrow!!

Hi
We just moved to altrincham 5 months ago from londonand love it. My dd is starting per school at Stamford park this sep
Pm me if you want more info

rachococo · 11/08/2012 22:42

Thanks, thinking of a property on Lock Rd, it is in Broadheath, and I have read some negative info on the area, it looks nice on google maps, and I would try and get my daughter in Navigation Primary then hop on the navigation tram to work in Bury. I am overseas so it is so hard to judge - any advice much appreciated!

Do you need to have to be particularly religious to go to a C of E school? Was considering Altrincham C of E as well if we end up renting on Lock Rd....

OP posts:
SoozleQ · 12/08/2012 00:44

Lock road is good. Think it can be quite difficult to get into Alty c of e from the start if you haven't been a regular church goer because it's popular and competitive but if your daughter is 8 and they have space for her In the relevant class i don't think it should be a problem. It's a nice school by all accounts.

rachococo · 12/08/2012 02:43

Thank you! So if you had to choose .... Lock Street or York Road??
I keep missing out on the rentals as they are snapped up within hours. Am thinking of renting a house mid sept and finding a cheapo hotel or b&b for 2 weeks, keen to get something sorted soon!

OK, missed out on York Street. I'm not having much luck, have missed out on 5 houses now. Only got a week to find a place so I can apply for schools for my daughter and book our flights. Starting to panic, if anyone sees any rentals advertised in supermarkets/papers etc. please pass them on to me. I will be forever grateful!!!! ;)

I don't know if this will help you at all but are you set on being along the tramline (sale, altrincham)? If the reason for the tramline was for easy access to Manchester city centre then you could rent along the trainline also.
Flixton and Urmston are lovely areas and there are quite a few places to rent. Not sure of your budget or even if you would consider the area but here is an available House to rent local schools are great too.

MarthasHarbour · 13/08/2012 09:01

Lock Road is lovely, it is right by Lawrence Road. The houses have lovely character.

If you end up with Station Cottage and find it is on a main road then dont worry too much, i imagine you would be on a 6 month let anyway so it gives you time to check out the area.

MarthasHarbour · 13/08/2012 09:02

pm me with your budget and specifications - i will have a look for you Smile

MarthasHarbour · 13/08/2012 12:58

Just looking on rightmove now

Station Cottages - i know this street, yes it is on Mcr Road however it is set back in a private mews type area. I would give it a go for 6 months (and it is gorgeous!). Just noticed it is catchment for Broadheath Primary - although you might be able to talk Park Rd into admissions if DD is now 8yo.

York St: You are in a good catchment area, ie Stamford Park = no brainer

Dont know your budget but this is on Byrom St and is also in catchment for Stamford Park - Byrom is one of the 3 'B' Roads which are rather popular

another one on York St

Lawrence Road (catchment for Nav Rd), this one has a decent size back yard (most of them on that street are postage stamp size]]

rachococo · 13/08/2012 18:31

Thanks so much... Station Cottages, Byrom, York St and Lawrence Rd are all let!! Just been on phone to agents for hours - they go so quick. I had put an offer on Station Cottages and Lawrence and wasn't successful.

They told me about a house on W Vale Rd in Timperley. It is up to our limit of £850, but I am getting desperate!!! What do you think of that area?
Thanks for your advice!

OP posts:
rachococo · 13/08/2012 18:51

Budget is £850, but hoping for lower. Need to move in end August, start September. As close to tram as possible, as need to drop off my 8 year old daughter and get to Bury by 10am.
Thanks!

TheOneWithTheHair · 13/08/2012 19:28

West Vale Road is nice. Close to navigation station so may be the school catchment too. From memory the houses have decent gardens but I can't be sure.

rachococo · 13/08/2012 19:49

Thnk you, going to push for this one!!

JonahB · 13/08/2012 21:39

Rachococo,
Very bizarrely (small world), I know your friend and have suggested my house to her (I live in Sale). I'm probably looking to rent my house, but its not definite. I've asked your friend to give me a call so we can discuss.

JonahB · 13/08/2012 21:59

Hi again, Are you looking for furnished or unfurnished?

rachococo · 14/08/2012 04:23

Hi JonahB, that is a coincidence! If you do decide to rent I am definitely interested, my friend did mention she knew of a possible rental in Sale. Don't mind furnished or unfurnished. Not really shipping any furniture (currently living in the USA) so some furniture would be helpful - but I'm flexible!
Thanks for the message!
