What's it like to live in Long Ashton/Clevedon/Portishead?

We're relocating from Bedminster (Victoria Park) to another part of Bristol/outskirts to get a larger garden/more bang for our housing budget buck! We're considering Long Ashton, Clevedon and Portishead and wondered if anyone could comment on facilities for young families, pubs, good independant shops etc
Plus how awful is the traffic commute - hubby works near Filton.
Thanks in advance!

Why are you moving in that direction if your DH has to work at Filton? The commute would be a nightmare. Surely easier to move to N Bristol/South Gloucestershire - Winterbourne, Thornbury etc? Or are you trying to stick with S Bristol schools?

I work in south bristol, my mum's in Longwell Green (childcare) and I know the area well being born and bred. Have considered North of Bristol but too far plus can't leave my manor!

He's been commuting from Bedminster for last 7 years so used to it! :)

I live in Portishead and really like living here. There are a fair few locals but also because of the marina development there are lots of new people too so it isn't a hard community to break into iykwim. I also lived in Pill and actually drove through it today and there were a fair few houses for sale. Pill and Clevedon are comparable in price and I think they are cheaper than Portishead and you will gt better value for money house wise. That said, you might get a bargain if you buy off of one of the developers?

Portishead, Clevedon and Pill are great for young families. Clevedon has more independant shops than Portishead though i'd say and more friendly/atmopheric pubs than Portishead. Pill has limited shops but is half way between Portishead and Clifton/Southville areas (I really like living in Pill for this reason but we moved to be nearer to school). The pull of Portishead is Gordano School but all the other areas have a lot to offer as well and it is case of balancing things for your needs and family.

Now that they have put traffic lights on the motorway roundabout, the commute to Filton will be better as the traffic does not get backed up on the Portbury Hundred like it used to Wink
