Histon mums - why has the butcher's stopped trading?

We went off to Robinson's on Saturday, only to find a brief sign saying that after 20 years they were ceasing trading, due to a change in circumstances. Does anyone know any more? We are really gutted about this, it was a great little shop with brilliant produce and very friendly staff. I suppose we'll have to trek to Cottenham for the nearest independent butcher, not too thrilled about that.

Really?? I didn't know this and I live here! I'll find out.....

cleoismycat · 12/06/2012 10:11

Apparently it wasn't making any money from people in the shop, it makes all it's profit supplying restaurants!!

milkmoustache · 12/06/2012 11:36

So does that mean they are still trading but just direct to suppliers? I'm pleased if that means they didn't all lose their livelihoods, but still gutted to lose them.
thanks for letting me know!

just out of interest, what was their pricing like? say for a whole free range chicken?

milkmoustache · 12/06/2012 18:47

They had some really good ones - called Diaper, unfortunately - which were top of the range, which were comparable to Waitrose prices, but really great flavour and brilliant quality. I thought their prices were pretty good, obv they couldn't compare with Tescos, but they used a lot of local farmers, made their sausages on site and did all the old-fashioned cuts that are now back in fashion.

As an alternative, I use an online butcher (based in Scotland). Their meat is really very nice and prices are good. They deliver next day and delivery is free is you spend £50 (I tend to fill up my freezer). I find it a pain to do food shopping in store these says. Anyway, they are called Campbells Meats - the quality is much better than supermarkets x

The farm shop in Chesterton Road is worth a visit, in central Cambridge. Very good prices for food that comes from Warks county. Prices compare well with supermarket but their rump steak is divine.

Do you mean the one opposite Staples?

Yes

if you ever frequent cheeky monkeys, the butchers in fulbourn, beaumonts is great, have shopped there for 11 years.. a total convert.

Also worth mentioning John at the Art of Meat in Arbury Court. On the way into town if you're coming from Histon. Easy parking, good quality stuff and friendly too.

There's a comment about the Robinson's closure on Localsecrets saying that they do intend to re-open again.

Would highly recommend Northrops on Mill Road. They also have a branch on Burleigh Street, if you're at the Grafton anyway. They do Diaper and Label Anglais chooks.
