Hi

Anyone live in Melbourn village or able to advise on what it is like? Is it easy to make friends if you're moving in from outside? What's the mix between commuters and people working more locally?

We've just seen a lovely place to rent in the village, but as we'll be moving up from London we don't know the area very well and the couple of friends /friends of friends I have in S Cambs also don't really know it.

My eldest DD would be going to the primary school and we also have twins who will be going to pre-school from Sept - so any views on the primary, the playgroup/pre-school and Little Hands nursery also appreciated.

Many thanks!

PS This is my first ever post on Mumsnet, so apologies if I've posted in the wrong place, used the wrong abbreviations etc!

Hi Confused , and welcome.
We moved to the village in 2004 -it's a good size, lots of amenities (gym, swimming pool, library). There's 2 schools, primary and secondary (you probably know that) 3 pubs, a chip shop, 2 playgrounds, 2 general stores open early till late and a few good hairdressers. Also a vet & butcher.

People are friendly to talk to, we've only got one or two mums that DD1 regularly mixes with though.

Haven't really noticed what the commuter ratio is, but from what I've seen there's a big percentage of retired people and quite a few people work locally.

My DD1 is at the primary, 315 kids on roll, just been OFSTED inspected ( I can send you the link if you PM me). They had a unsettled few years where there was no permanent head (although the guy who was acting head is an absolute diamond) but there's a new head now and new codes of conduct for the kids.

There's two feeder playgroups, Little Hands is about 10 minutes walk from school, I didn't choose it because the sessions didn't fit my needs. Melbourn playgroup is in the school grounds, DD2 leaves in the summer and I've always found them very good. There's also an afterschool club till 6.

There's a proposal to build a new village hub on the old police station site with bigger library, cafe, ATM, loos etc which should get underway in the near future.

Crime rates are pretty low, the odd group of kids in the High Street car park and the odd bit of fisticuffs here and there, but not a great deal.

What else.... 26 bus goes once an hour to Royston and Cambridge, train station 10-15 minutes walk away, try and avoid houses near Sheene Mill (station road) as it's a popular wedding venue and can be noisy. A village mag comes out quarterly with info about what's going on, and there's a school fayre and also a village fete in June.

If you're still awake after that lot, feel free to PM me if I can be any more help.

Thanks very much. Since my original post, we've actually decided to rent another house in Cambridge itself. Although it's a bit more expensive, it will be more convenient as I'm going to be studying at Homerton next year. I imagine that when we come to buy we won't be able to afford Cambridge, so very useful to have your views on Melbourn.
