play group, childminder, part time nursery, or holiday club over the summer?

Hi all, I'm moving to Teddington late May / early June.

My daughter is due to start reception in September and I'm looking for a part-time (9-12 or so) care option from June to August.

I'm not sure what to go for.. are there any play groups in the area that are not impossible to get into? Or perhaps private nurseries taking children part time? Holiday clubs that will take kids under 4 and NOT currently enrolled in school (she's turning 4 in August)?

Thank you very much for any suggestions or advice.

ps. Also considering childminders, any idea what the local rates would be?

I know my daughters pre school do a holiday club (based in Twickenham) but that only be for July/August. Let me know if want details.

Not sure about other nurseries but would think may be tricky given you only want a short spell of care.

Have you been on richmond council website as may have info on childminders with vacancies ?

Gigondas · 17/04/2012 15:07

Searched on here link - says £7 per hour for cm

londoniana · 17/04/2012 15:12

Thanks much yes that's the main problem I'm looking for June-August, most holiday clubs would exclude July, no?

Also don't drive so I would prefer a Teddington option if possible.

Pre school is strawberry hill so walk able (or bus or train) from teddington. But sounds like cm may be a better bet (providing they aren't away in August and have spaces).

teddyton · 17/04/2012 19:03

I think some of the nurseries like kids unlimited on sandy lane or the Asquith ones could have spaces possibly.
There is also koosa kids at Teddington school but they have to be 4 for that
All of the pre schools finish mid July and i would expect them to be full but there is no harm in ringing round .
You are more likely to get place in private day nursery I would of thought

londoniana · 17/04/2012 23:05

Thanks, it appears that the private nurseries have some availability for the summer, not so much the playgroups... the closest to us are Buttons, then Asquith and kidsunlimited.

I'll also need before/after school care once school starts, but not sure yet which school we'll be accepted to. Collis is our closest but their wraparound care group (CATS) seems to have a long wait list and only takes children older than 5. Hampton wick infants and Stanley both have after school options but not sure how oversubscribed they are. And Stanley is more than a mile and a half away so it's the worst case scenario...

Here's the council link for childcare search, if anyone else is looking:

Hi
We have personal experience of the wrap around care at Hampton Wick it is graded outstanding by Ofstead and is fantastic they have just sent out the applications forms to those already in the school for 2012 .
However they should have space for reception children 2012 entry from 12-3(sessional care) .As soon as you have your school place sorted I would call the school straight away to put on wait list .
Collis has very limited number of places for wrap around care and i don't think they offer sessional care after school at all from 12-3 winter term.
Stanley has very comprehensive wrap around care but don't know anyone who goes there .

Hi londonania

How are you getting on? Just signed back on for the first time in a while and saw your post on the other thread too. Our move date is 1 June but still no property to move to and not rented our house out yet either. Oh well, not panicking yet!

I've got an almost 4 year old DD and a 2 year old DS and I was able to get both of them into a lovely nursery called Aston Pierpoint. Its in Hampton but out of all the nurseries I visited (and I looked at 8 of them!) I liked this one the best. They know that DD will be going to school in September (hopefully) and are happy to take her until then. I think only because I am so flexible as to when they go in. After September, they will be able to take them both if need be for the times that I want. I thought it would be an option to keep DD there if she doesn't get into one of the schools we want straight away. Although still undecided on that. One of the reasons I liked this nursery is because of the outdoor space they have and the fact that both of them can play together in the outside area which they are free to visit as and when they like (weather permitting).

They also do wrap around care and (I think) a pick up/drop off service. Not sure about that though, you would need to check. I liked the Preschool place in Hampton Wick as well but they didn't have spaces until September which didn't suit. I have a baby due in 3 weeks so will definitely need some nursery time as soon as we arrive!

And yes, we'd love to meet up for a coffee when we all get settled. Maybe a picnic in Bushy Park! Grin

Hi tangledtights, thanks, I'm trying hard not to panic at this stage, that's where I'm at :)

Bought a flat in Teddington and just got past the mortgage valuation stage. Now it's a matter of pushing solicitors on both sides to do the exchange on time so that we get the keys on June 1.

Meanwhile I'm trying to sort out child care for the summer and I'll go check the local nurseries soon. I wish I knew which school we'll be getting into, as some of the nurseries do wraparound care as well.

I did apply for a reception place in Ealing where we currently live and we got our 2nd choice school. Ealing council advised us to accept and keep the place until we exchange contracts and then ring Richmond admissions for a school place in Teddington. I'm hoping for Collis or Hampton Wick infants but at this stage I can't even put her on the list.

The picnic sounds wonderful and Bushy park is a 10-min walk from our (future) place so I'm all in :)

Forgot to say, I think you're very brave to move with a new baby and 2 toddlers, good luck! I can't imagine being able to do that, you must be super-organised!

OP posts:
londoniana · 18/04/2012 23:35

Thank you very much teddyton, I'm liking Hampton Wick more and more and it's a 10-min walk so definitely doable. I must be delusional to think we'll get into Collis or Hampton wick infants being a late admission case but one must hope :)

Hi
Some info
I know people who got Hampton wick who where 1400m away due to extra class.but my neighbour who was 710m from collis did not get in

londoniana · 19/04/2012 11:22

Hi playgroup, thanks! they are probably high up on the wait list for Collis, aren't they?

How do they measure distance, is it the main school gate or closest school gate? We will be about 450m from one of the Collis school gates but distance to the main gate is almost double than that.

OP posts:
playgroup · 19/04/2012 13:29

hi
i have the cut off distance for you
Collis 658m 54 siblings last year 705 INTAKE 90
Hampton Wick 1157m last year 1011m that with extra 30 kids intake 90 20 siblings
Stanley 1809m 46 siblings last year 2094m intake 120

NIGHTMARE

playgroup · 19/04/2012 13:30

they measure from both gates

londoniana · 19/04/2012 13:54

Thanks it's good to know about the gate, at least we will be high on the wait list for Collis, once we get on it. H Wick Infant is 1200m or so and Stanley is more than 2km away.

I'm trying not to despair now, seeing these stats. Hopefully they will add a bulge class at Collis like in previous years? I feel so helpless knowing I can't even add her to the wait list until mid or even end of May when we exchange contracts.

OP posts:
playgroup · 19/04/2012 19:23

Sacred heart is taking a bulge class.

Probably just for Catholics though.....

playgroup · 19/04/2012 19:24

Have all my mummy friends in collis trying to find out if taking extra class

nparkin · 01/05/2012 11:30

Does anyone know the catchment distance for St Marys and St Peters Primary in Teddington? Also it has outstanding but does anyone actually have first hand knowledge of it?
