Kids Unlimited Wolfson Court & Rainbow Day Nursery Trumpington

I am looking for a nursery place in September for my 2 year old. He's currently in a lovely nursery in the city, but the opening times are really tricky. I'm really interested if anyone has any knowledge of either of these two. Thanks

We've not been thrilled with Wolfson Court, but it has got better under new management, and it definitely improves the older your child is. Your DS would probably be fine.

That being said it certainly wasn't our first choice, and it still wouldn't be.

There are a lot of changes going on at Wolfson Court, a lot of key members of staff have left and more will be leaving in the coming weeks, I know this happens at a lot of nurseries but probably more so at Wolfson I believe. Overall I am very happy with the care my child gets there and he is happy.

Have knowledge of Rainbow Day Nursery from a couple of years ago and would unhesitatingly recommend then. Only second hand feedback now but friends' children are still very happy there.

My only complaint was that they weren't always brilliant at admin so if you don't get a response to an email or call, then do drop in and see them. They seemed genuinely more interested in looking after the children than doing the admin and I loved that all the staff knew all the children and when we first looked round they all started chatting to my (not quite 1yo) son when they said hello. They aren't huge though, so not always space available.

Wolfson has a not great reputation in general, but my son has been ok there. Having said that, I wouldn't put a small baby there, knowing how it is. Fine for toddlers upwards. Staff turnover is a worry. I wouldn't want him there full time for this reason, he only goes part time so nursery isn't so crucial in his life as it is for the 5day-a-week kids if you see what I mean.

I wonder about the management style: a few months ago I saw a great member of staff get a public telling off in front of me and a couple of children. The management may not be all it should be; there have been 2 managers in our year and a half (with a long gap between them with an interim visiting manager), and 2 deputies have left relatively recently. Staff who leave go in a hurry - the first you know is a sign on the door saying "so and so has left" or "so and so is leaving in 3 days", so there's no time to help your child understand that their favourite staff member is going to disappear.

I won't be removing my son as he is happy now and it's not worth the upheaval, but if we have a second child I will look around at different ones rather than automatically enrolling in Wolfson.

I have mixed feelings: I've stuck up for Wolfson on MN in the past, but on balance I couldn't recommend it to a friend without reservation.

I sent my son to rainbow nursery between the ages of 2 -3. He was generally happy enough when he was 2 -2.5 but as he got older he got bored and didnt want to go anymore. I would say they are a good nursery but due to the class/group sizes older kids may get a bit bored if they are not getting a lot of attention. The staff are really nice though.

Big fan of Rainbow here. Their paperwork is not as shiny as the Kids Unlimited nurseries, but they (as above) seem to want to spend more time playing and looking after the children. All the staff (from which ever room) know each and every child. We have been very, very impressed and DS loves it.

Hi

I will be moving to Cambridge in September and need to find a nursery close to either judge business school or churchill college. I found kidsunlimited wolfson to be the nearest, but the reviews thus far worries me.

High staff turnover is not always a good thing. As I am not familiar with Cambridge, I would greatly appreciate any feedback from this forum.

Thanks

Hi there :)

One of the first things to do I would suspect is to see where there are spaces available, or where you can be added to waiting lists.

There are a few nurseries that wouldn't be too far from the JBS but nurseries in Cambridge are very oversubscribed IME so knowing where places may be available willinitially narrow your search down.

I'm assuming that you're joining the University in some capacity: have you spoken to the University Childcare Service yet? They hold feedback for nurseries and childminders as an additional source of info.
