Having a wobble about moving to York - come tell me why it's lovely

We made a rather rash decision in January and decided to move to York. I've been there once for two days. My husband is from Yorkshire. He wants to be closer to his elderly mother and he wants our children to go to private school (which we can't afford to do where we currently live). Our boys have got into Clifton and St Olaves. Our house is on the market. Basically once the school year is up, we're moving ready to start in Sept at the new schools.

We currently live in a big, grade 2 listed lovely house with a big garden and pool. Beautiful countryside on our doorstep. Good (free) schools.

The downsides - you've got to get in your car to get anything and the people are not massively friendly, although I do now have a circle of friends that it's taken me years to build up. We just couldn't see ourselves growing old here and figured we needed to make a move sooner rather than later.

Our reasons for moving to York (besides the schools and MIL situation) was to have the lovely amenities on our doorstep (i.e. not having to get in car everywhere) and friendlier people. But I'm now second guessing our decision. Will I make friends? Am I going to be spending my life stuck in traffic? Can we find a house that is bigger than a postage stamp to live in that is still walkable to the school.

Please come and tell me why living in York is lovely and how it is the right decision.

We are in one of the villages just south of York and although it takes 10 mins to bike to the station we have a choice of excellent secondaries and outstanding primary provision in the village. We looked both in York and further out but love where we are as there is a real community feel and lots for the kids to join in.

Only ten minutes? Can't be very far out... I'm intrigued?

Pickles2015 · 23/01/2016 13:37

Yes I saw that Scarcroft school is due to expand, so that will provided some extra places and think we'll also have a look at Fulford area. Which village are you in andasliceofcakeplease, that sounds ideal to have that village community and be so close to town.
We're in south west London WildebeestH in wandsworth, perhaps we should try and meet up when we get to York, would be lovely to get to know some other people with kids of similar ages?

Hi recent posters! I'm really glad to have found this thread, I'm moving to York to the southbank area in 3 weeks from Dulwich in South East London and though i'm from there originally it's still daunting! I would definitely be up for meeting for coffee or something when everyone gets there? Not sure if our kids are the same ages though, I have a just 2 year old boy. WildebeestH - how I will miss Crystal Palace Park!

Hi lisaloulou84,

We've just moved, been here (southbank area) a week now, and would be very happy to meet up when you arrive, just let me know and we can get a coffee organised. Hope the moving prep is going well! It is lovely here! X

Well we did exactly the same thing 4 years ago when we moved from London to Rawcliffe area of York. We have children that are now happily schooled at Bootham, they walk to school. It's a beautiful city and the people are really friendly.

Hello, we are also moving to York from down south in a couple of weeks! I would love to know how everyone who has recently moved there is getting on. Unfortunately we haven't managed to find a house yet (we'll be squeezing into my husband's temporary accommodation as he is already working up there) but our children (aged 7 and nearly 10) are due to start at Clifton and St Olave's after Easter so at least that's sorted. We would love to chat to/meet up with anyone also new to the area or with similar age children!

i know this is an old thread but wondering how people got on. in last minute panic over buying bigger house in london or moving to york (st peter’s for the kids). dd age 12 does not want to move but that’s not enough of a reason not to.

did it work out??
