Onslow village, what's it like"?

Hi, we are looking at areas to buy a house and thinking about onslow as it has houses in our budget and is close to town centre and A3. But have heard mixed reports on it, some people a bit snooty about it but looks fine to us and others saying folks there unfriendly! We have moved from a city and now renting in godalming which is ok but very quiet for us and schools apart from bus bridge are not good. Def don't want to live in a little village.
Any advice please?

I've been here little while and really like it. I've found people friendly and I love how close it is to the A3. It makes it so much quicker to get in and out of town. You're pretty much guaranteed Onslow, Qn Eleanors and County for schools so that's been a real worry off my mind.

I think it's nicer the further up you go. Lower down the hill can be studenty and busier streets (although the 'village' is technically only from Curling Vale up. It's pretty quiet up here. People have been very friendly and because it is quite enclosed I think there's a real sense of community.

It's good for access to the amazing facilities at the Sports Park as well.

If you do move here give me a shout and we can have coffee.

Its not a village, may have been once, now just a suburb of town, area between A3 and the busy Farnham Road (so a lot of traffic noise). Bit of a rat run as cars come down from Hogs Back and cut through Onslow Village to get to the Uni and Hospital as the A3 has large tailbacks. The County School has the usual bullying, kids smoking outside and teachers doing a recky of the area around. (I walk past there everyday). As for there being places at the schools, perhaps there is a reason for it.

We moved to Onslow Village from Inner London about 3 years ago and have found it to be a very friendly, lovely place to live. I agree with Kids4life says in terms of Curling Vale and Friars Gate being a bit of a rat run but the street i live on which is barely 100m from there hardly sees a non resident car all day so it is not too much of a problem. I also never found the traffic noise to be a problem. THe only time i hear it at all is about 7am as i am walking down to the station.

THe beech hedges are lovely, the playing fields are well maintained and the arboretum is fab. The schools from what i can see are very good. Onslow Infants has an outstanding ranking from Ofstead and i beleive Queen Elanors does as well. County seems like a fairly good high school. I certainly dont see the kinds of behavior from the kids there that i see from the kids coming out of Kings International which i think is the next closest secondary school i can think of.

THe council are also about to implement residents parking which should solve the problem of commuters parking in the village and walking down to the station and taking up all the on street parking.

Parts of Onslow Village are in a conservation zone and the council used to be very active in limiting renovations etc but just lately they seem to have loosened up a bit on the restrictions which we are happy about as we are planning one!

Good luck with your house hunting!
