Calling mums in Harpenden!

Hello, my family are looking at moving to Harpenden because it sounds nice! Can any Harpenden residents confirm this?!

I'm currently living in Harrow and things are slowly going downhill here, plus we've got an eye on the school situation, which really isn't great. The schools in Harpenden have good ratings - is this something you have experienced?

We're obviously planning to visit the area to check out the shops, parks, etc but what's it like for doctors surgeries, things for kids to do during holidays/weekends, the sort of things we won't be able to see for ourselves during our visits? Are there any areas to avoid when it comes to moving there?

Sorry, I know these are broad questions, but I'm trying to put out as many feelers as possible to get a general idea of what it's like to actually live there!

Many thanks.

You have to be careful where you buy in Harpenden as the schools are very popular and lots of parents didn't get any of their top 3 primary places last year,

I am in St Albans and it is just as nice as Harpenden. They are both lovely places to live (and work)

Hi yes, Harpenden is a great place to live lots of social mums groups if you have kids and the time to join in. Lots of activities for children, we have everything you could possibly want for bringing up a family and close to London for work and evenings out when they grow up. Yes I do agree that the schooling here is great my parents moved back here when I was ready for Senior school and we now have 2 young children in Junior schools here and yes because the schools are so good the catchment area for them gets smaller and smaller and as there are more siblings they do take priority so yes you do have to live on the doorstep to get the schools you want and yes it will cost your a premium to do that. Don't always listen to and estate agent it is worth asking neighbours when looking for house as we are less the 1km from our closest school and didn't get a place on the first round of placements but were lucky on the second. A lot of people rent for the first year and then find a house. Best of Luck!

Harpenden is a great place to live and bring up children. We moved here from London eight years ago and we have no regrets. The state schools are excellent but oversubscribed, so you need to be careful which catchment area you live in as they cover very small area. There are also excellent private schools. It is safe and there are loads of activities for the children. Highly recommend.
