hi

Im looking to move to bromley borough, and visited bekenham, bromley, orpinton

I have dd of 2 year old. I want a good primary school and hopefully he will get a place in st olaves. That is why i want to move to this area

I liked beckenham a lot Any disadvantages of this area?

I found orpington quite dreary. But south orpington seems good.
As south orpington has many good primary schools, i will be happy to move to the area.
But my dh didnt like orpington after seeing the high street.
Anyone who knows about south orpington?

or other areas within. BRomley borough?

Thanks.

I'm biased living in Beckenham. It's great! School wise there are good ones although you have to be in the catchment areas.

I see no disadvantages really - well maybe ghat it's a bit small in the town centre but Bromley is ten mins by car or train so not an issue.

I also have a 2 year old and loads for him too.

Petts wood? Hayes? These areas both have good primaries, as does the Crofton area. Tubbenden, Crofton etc. lots of people I know are moving to be near darrick wood secondary catchment because of the senior school. The primaries round there are very good too.

For what it's worth I ink is madness to move on the basis that your 2 year old may get into st olaves. Newstead, the girls equivalent had about 9000 applications for year 7 last year. A child can be exceptionally bright and coached as well, possibly coming from independent primary and STILL not get in. At least if you move somewhere with decent secondary comprehensive as a fall back position you won't be putting all your eggs in one basket.

Darrick wood, Hayes and Langley girls/boys all perform well t the moment. But schools can change a huge amount in 8 years....

I wasn't brought up in Bromley but have lived in the borough for 5 years now in 4 different locations and probably know the area more than someone who's lived her all their lives!

I lived in Sundridge Park first which, for primary schools is okay, Scotts Park is a really nice school but then there's not many local shops though Bromley is practically a stones throw away.

I then moved to Bromley South which was more useful for transport links, local shops but I started a family here so then moved again so, personally, wouldn't recommend it but that's just me.

Then I was in Petts Wood, amazing area for me. Lovely, friendly neighbours, has a little town centre that does have almost everything you need. It is smack bang in the middle of a good catchment area for schools. When I was there my DD1 got in to Darrick Wood Nursery but just down the road you have Crofton too. Petts Wood is under Orpington but doesn't feel like you're in Orpington.

I'm now living in Bickley which is perfect for schools in my opinion. Only downside I'd say is comparing it to Petts Wood, local shops aren't as good.

All in all, Bromley is a lovely area. Well, coming from Camberwell anywhere could be a nice area lol. Area's I'd say to avoid are Downham, Grove Park, St Pauls Cray, St Mary Cray, Orpington Town Centre, Elmers End and Penge. But other areas like Beckenham, Hayes, Crofton, Chelsfield, Locksbottom, Farnborough, Elmstead Woods, Chislehurst, West Wickham and Shortlands are all lovely too.

Some people may disagree with my opinion on those areas so I'm sorry if I may offend anyone :)

Hi!

I live in south Orpington, green st green in fact. Primary schools around here are really good, Green St Green primary is currently outstanding in ofstead report and Warren road has a really good reputation too. Is quite quiet around here but good transport links and waitrose down the road. Don't really get any trouble and feel safe here.

Petts Wood also have an amazing primary school, st James RC primary, but have heard it is very hard to get into. My area is in the st olaves catchment too as well as Darrick wood and I think ravenswood. I agree things can change quickly in the next few years but the primaries here have always been good :)

Hi there black1947! This is quite an old thread so it may be best for you to start a new one on local talk.

Petts wood is a great to bring up a family. Good local primary in Crofton. For secondaries it is a bit of a dead area unless your child is bright and can get into St Olaves/Newstead or is prepared to travel to the Bexley or Kent Grammars. House prices will be substantially more than nearby areas which reflects its desirability. For cheaper houses that aren't too far away try the 1960s houses on the Crofton Place Farm Estate. Good luck.
