HELP- NT (Nuchal scan) in Glasgow?

Hi
I'm 6wk + 1 and have seen my GP and now awaiting booking appointment etc. I've been reading some of the posts of hat to expect at Southern general and victoria ante-natal care and it seems like most people don't get their appointment until they are 12 weeks or over. I'm also wondering if Glasgow offers the Nuchal scan or is it just a dating scan. I'm thinking of booking one privately if they don't as if i'm not seen until 13 or 14 weeks then the slot for NT scan will have passed. Any advice would be welcome!

Hi nhs does not offer it as standard in Glasgow but if you think you are high risk get your gp to do an urgent referral to foetal medicine.
If you are not high risk you can phone the private hospitals, Nuffield ect to arrange a private one, not sure of the cost sorry.

Thanks very much - not sure if I'd be classed as high risk as over 35 but can do some more digging. Just needed to know if it was standard.

Hi J, I'm 36 and not classed as high risk...so no nuchal scan offered just a dating scan at 12/13 weeks. They do however do all the blood tests at your booking in appt so, for me, I didn't feel the need to go for a private nuchal scan. HTH Smile

Oh, and the blood results came back really quickly so didn't have to wonder for ages and ages if everything was ok.

Brilliant thanks for the replies. I was offered one when living in England last year but wondered if that was due to age. But perhaps it's just standard there. Thanks again.

I had a private nuchal scan at the Nuffield, done by my NHS consultant. It was £100 at the time. I had it because in all three of my pregnancies the blood tests indicated I had a reasonably high risk of downs syndrome and I wanted a clearer indication of how likely this was.

I would recommend Nuffield Hospital for the Nuchal Scan. I had one a few weeks back, however it's expensive at £230. Worth it though!

Had CUBS procedures doen at Nuffield about £200 4 years ago but I'm way older than you and was higher risk. YOu will still be offfered triple test bloods on the NHS and can decide if you want to go further which was what I did.

Glasgow does now provide a 20 week scan if you want one, I had mine in the summer, it was optional so I said yes please, they call it a foetal anomaly scan and you have to give consent for them to do it. It seemed really detailed and took about half an hour. This is fairly new for Glagsgow as they used to only offer the 12 week scan, not sure when it changed. Got to find out what I was having too (and they got it right!).

I had the 20 week anomaly scan at Rottenrow in 2001 as part of a trial, it wasnt offered at Princess Royal in 2007 when I had DD2. I wasnt aware it was standard but things could have moved on.

The 20 week anomaly scan became standard from Jan 2010, I believe.

I've just booked for an NT scan with babybond. It's £189, but I think it will be worthwhile for the peace of mind.

The CUBS test (nuchal scan plus blood test) at the Nuffield is done by consultants from the foetal medicine dept at the Suthern General. You can also have a chat to them at the same time. The Prof who runs the dept does the appts. The blood test is not the same as the one offered by the NHS (in Glasgow) it's far more accurate.

Re: babybond. I'd check their qualifications before booking. Some staff may be NHS-trained sonographers who happen to work there, but I believe there's no guarantee of any particular training as they don't have to meet any professional standards to offer the scans. They are known in the trade as "vanity / entertainment" scanners. Something to be aware of.
