Anyone with information on York schools?

I've name changed for this and am hoping to get some info on schools in York. We're moving up there in september and our oldest will be going into year 9, next going into year 7 and one going into year 3. We understand that without a post code until later in the year it will be very hard to get places and we are willing to go private if we don't get a school the DCs like. So far we've looked around Bootham and St Peter's for private and Fulford, Huntington and Manor state wise. We haven't looked at any primaries yet. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of the schools listed above or if there are any others to consider? Also what primaries are thought of as being desirable?

looking - will you be working in york, otherwise why not look nearer to DHs work over hudds way, there are lots of lovely places (as well as some less lovely) a state grammar and some decent pivate schools, houses cheaper too.
If you are going to york have friends with dcs at St Petes, very happy indeed there, but you would need your eldest going into y9 to sit the entrance exam very soon indeed.
Millthorpe - used to work with the chap who took over as head relatively recently - he is excellent so should be good for the school.

We're moving from a city not unlike Huddersfield and really liked the look of York as it seems to have a lot going on for the DC and as it's a small and safe place we think it would be a good place for the DC to learn some independence as that's not really possible where we live at the moment. That's another reason for wanting to live as centrally as possible; we feel that if we were further out the DCs would rely on us for driving them everywhere!
Thanks for the info on Bootham and St Peter's. Am I right in thinking they suit two very different types of people?

Such a good decision to move to York. We absolutely love it. Nothing better than spending the day wondering around the city. Christmas was magical. Not many bad schools in York, but if the houses are cheaper then obviously crap catchment. We lived in a fab house in a Acomb but felt pushed to move once we reached school age as not so good. I agree that the Southbank area may be the house type you are looking at,as well as cycling/walking distance to station. Can't really think where else would match your requirements. If you want to pm me I am more than happy to be more specific. We have been in York for over 15 years as a couple.

Have a look at the catchment area for Fishergate primary. If I remember correctly it's rather good, is also in the catchment for Fulford and very cental. It isn't for us as my husband isn't a fan of town houses but if we could find a new build 4 bed detached there we'd be off like a shot!

Although should probably add that ddmis not yet 2 so we've only been looking in the abstract....

Moving near York

We are thinking of moving to one of the villages to the south of York- maybe sherborne in elmett or nearby. What are the state schools like primary and secondary. Dd1 quite shy, very academic. Dd2 very confident and outgoing loves dancing and singing. Ds easygoing!

Hi we moved to York last July with kids the same ages as yours. They have all gone to bootham and we couldn't be happier with it. The senior school particularly is fantastic. My boys started there knowing no one ( especially the one starting yr 10) and they could not have been made more welcome and have made great friends. The school go out of their way too to make parents welcome. We have made friends by going to family lunch each Saturday. Be happy to help more if you have any questions.
