Eastbourne college - bullying

Does anyone have any experience of bullying at Eastbourne College? My son has had two terrible years there and although the teachers are lovely and very supportive, they do seem to be in denial as to the extent of the problem and nothing they do seems to work.

Hello I am from a similar area from you and I really really think you should be looking at other schools. You are effectively paying for your child to be unhappy. Most of the private schools seem to have strong anti-bullying commitments and if the last two years have been terrible I would move your son as soon as possible. Everyone has a right to go to school without dread and I really believe Eastbourne College has not done enough to resolve the situation. Your son will lose all confidence if something is not done. My daughter attends a local private primary and a boy was causing problems for other children and was excluded for ever in a couple of weeks. Something has to be done and you have to show your unhappiness by pulling the plug on their income. There are many private secondary schools in Sussex Shoreham College, Hurst, Lancing, Brighton College, Lewes Old Grammar, Ardingly and St Bedes. Most prob do a bus service to other parts of the area. Please start looking and don't let him suffer any longer.

I have to agree with maiacam; two years is a long time, and there are other options. I let my own DS put up with constant bullying, because his teachers said they were sorting, not to worry, tell him they are on the case - but they weren't, not in the way I would expect. I kept telling him to believe in the adults around him, trust they'd make things right, but in the end we've all let him down - and that includes me because I trusted the 'experts'! I've got to declare my interest, I now work at Brighton College; seeing how they are right on top of the slightest suggestion of bullying has made me realise I let my DS put up with far too much, for far too long, and have applied - hope he gets a place there! Whatever you decide, there are loads of options. Maia's right; BC runs a bus out to Eastbourne, so will most of the other schools she mentions. Good luck - and trust your instincts.

Agree with the others. 2 years without sorting it is too long. Move schools. When my DD was bullied at primary in the end this is what worked for us.(stuck it out a year and a term which I now bitterly regret)
My other 2 DD's often talk about children they see who are bullied over a period and always say the child should move schools. One boy has been bullied since year 7 (state school) and is now in Year 11 and things have never really improved for him - even the teachers seem to dislike him.My DD sits with him in 2 classes and is often asked "does she mind?" - he is a very sweet boy.
Look around at all the other schools and if you are still set on EC then ask for your son to be moved into a different class and tell the head you are not happy with the application of their anti-bullying policy and then write to the Board of Govenors. Best of luck - hope things improve for your son.

Well done in posting this. I posted about Eastbourne College here:

The reason for you that no-one heeded your complaints about bullying is very simple. The school is obsessed with its reputation and image. In my day bullying was ignored, so it did not exist.
