Wimbledon or Barnes/Mortlake: which is better?

Hi there,

New to mumsnet so please excuse any false steps... Can anyone help with their opinions? We are currently considering moving house either to Barnes/Mortlake (a shoebox near lots of green space and great schools) or a spacious house in Merton Park area of Wimbledon (Wimbledon Chase catchment) - which, in your opinion is better?

The Bournemouth Road one BIWI? It's lovely round there. Though if I lived there I would spend far too much time and money in La Botegga del Pane! And DS2 would make me stand outside the fire station all day...

Hello! I live in Raynes Park and grew up in Merton Park - would definitely recommend the areas to live in that you have mentioned over Barnes/Mortlake in a very biased fashion though you understand! I also would definitely go for a moer spacious house, and you are near to loads of green spaces within walking distance in nearly all of wimbledon/merton park I would say.

I also went to Wimbledon chase myself - although when it was a middle school and loved it!!!

Sorry - this is me with my 'proper' name not my hallowe'en one!!!

The big decider for me is the flightpath issue . Definitely much more airplane noise over Mortlake continuing into areas like Kew, Chiswick, Ham, Sheen and Barnes. Get some in Wimbledon but less.

Peka · 08/11/2011 20:23

Hello again! Good point WobblyPig - Wimbledon is much quieter from that point of view. I saw the house, it's lovely (although needs work) and in a really nice area but then DH decided he's now not sure about being so far out [puts on backpack and trudges on again wearily]... we are spreading our options to Southfields (I know, I know, serried rows again), but I'm hoping we'll be back again to take a second look soon. Thanks so much to everyone for all the really useful info, definitely makes me feel like Wimbledon is a really friendly, welcoming place!

Southfields much less transport options - I love having the northern line or the fast train to waterloo AND the Thameslink and Merton Park is perfectly positioned for them. Round there the traffic is bad once you're out of the peace of Merton Park but then its nowhere near as bad as Barnes imo.

Quick update, after vacillating back and forth we are doing another viewing in Wimbledon today. I have a good feeling about this. It may just be where we end up - ah a happy ending (fingers crossed)!

How was the viewing?

Peka · 22/11/2011 21:30

Yes very good - may have bought a house in Wimbledon!!?! All very exciting, will have to take you all up on the offers to show me round!

Oh wow! Many congratulations! Can we all come to the house-warming? Wink My DS is 13 months, so not much older than yours, will gladly hook up. Whereabouts is your new home? When do you move in? Hope it all goes smoothly.

Peka · 23/11/2011 19:26

Hi NoHun we'd love to meet up! My DS is 10 months... Actually I'm thinking it will be a while before it all gets sorted - probs Spring time, but we may sally forth in the area before then to get to know it. Will send you a message to arrange, maybe in a couple of weeks time when all the terror, stress and excitement has subsided a bit... been a long journey this far!

Ace. I will watch out for a PM. Happy moving planning and packing etc.

Lottothink · 30/05/2017 10:58

Hi Peka

as we are looking at the same areas - though discounted Wimbledon due to schools - I saw this post from way before and wondered where you ended up and if you can offer your views for your area and the schools etc. all the things you wanted were the same as ours. thanks

Hi Lottothink

Welcome to our Talk pages.

It might be wise to start a new thread as this is most definitely a 'Z'(ombie) one.

Sure our local Merton Mumsnetters would be interested to hear why you've "discounted Wimbledon due to schools". Lots has changed regarding schooling locally (certainly in the state sector) since the OP originally posted, back in 2011. Feel certain that we could collectively provide current insights which would potentially be of help to you in decision-making.

Kate
