Pregnant and moving house dilema

imissbrie · 23/10/2011 00:21

So I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and due to have my first baby in May (exciting). We are planning on moving house in January 2012.

So there's so much to think about, location, size, schools! I've lived in the west end for the last 5 years so I know the area very well. We are renting and hoping to pay 700quid a month for a 2 bedroom. Anyway all the flats I'm looking at just don't seem to cut it. They all look shabby and studenty. Also I don't want to live in a building full of 18 year olds! So I've been thinking maybe Partick, Whiteinch, Broomlands or Hyndland kinda area. My other half is a bar manager in the west end also and works anti social hours so living locally would save taxi fairs. The spanner in the works is the south side, Shawlands! I don't know the area well but the flats are beautiful and so much larger. Basically I get so much more for my money. And no students! Basically ideal, apart from the taxi prices which would be about 5 times a week. Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks in advance!

Really? It has nice parks, schools seem quite ok, nice coffee shop etc so people tell me. Do you live there?

nope. am strictly west end. too many glaswegians on the sooth side.

I am Scotstoun - I wouln't say Whiteinch was the nicest. Some nice big flats in Anniesland, my old 2 bed on GWroad was huge. Broomhill might be good.

imissbrie · 23/10/2011 00:38

It seems like a nice mini Glasgow inside Glasgow, for my price range the flats are SO much prettier and bigger. Downside is it'd be a bit out the way for my mum for baby sitting purposes (when the time comes). And would people go out there way to visit me in the S.S. sadly I doubt it and I don't want to be a lonely new mum. Hmmm maybe I'll find a wee diamond in the rough in the west end.

so so many baby classes/groups etc in west end- not sure about shwlnds, but check it out an see.

Broomhill would be my choice. What about the other side of Great Western Rd? I've got friends with nice flats in Kelvindale and North Kelvinside if you're looking for cheaper?

Tbh, where there are flats within a few miles of a University there'll be students (loads of them in the Southside too!), but a lot of them'll be packing up around your due date and antisocial neighbours come in all shapes and sizes - kind of comes with the territory with a tenement. Or you could have fab neighbours and find a babysitter on tap

Our downstairs neighbour, who wasn't a student but was a 22 year old layabout living with his don't-care dad, got a bit antisocial with the music when ds was tiny, but actually was pretty shamefaced when confronted by dh at 2am telling him he'd woken the baby. This was actually a lie, ds would have slept through Metallica in concert in the next room, but he'd woken me up which was far worse.

We got our own back when ds started walking - thundering around on laminate flooring at 7am. Oh. What a shame.

Layabout neighbour is now a new father, has taken over the lease with his partner and is mortified by his past behaviour and a model neighbour Grin

Shawlands is a really lovely place to live. The housing is great and so are the amenities. Its really worth considering for a fabulous quality of life :)

AitchTwoOh · 23/10/2011 01:13

honestly, you would be crackers to move away from your mum i think. if she's the type who would baby sit and not drive you up the wall, that is. can't believe you can't get somewhere great for 700quid per month. Shock

imissbrie · 23/10/2011 01:17

Are Kelvindale and North Kelvinside nice places to live, I don't know them well. Is there shops/things to do there? Or is it close enough to byres that its not needed? A nice area means a lot to me and being quite close to byres rd/dumbarton rd would be prefered so my mum can visit easily (if staying in the west). There's new builds on Crow rd that look nice but I prefer period features.

Och I can't decide! It's too difficult :P

I have a nice 1 be in scotstoun for 399, and when was looking saw lots of nice 2 beds for 450 - infact my nice stuent flat on dumbarton road was 450 2 bed.

sorry shit typing, ust in from shift and cant be arsed!

imissbrie · 23/10/2011 01:20

I know aitch its a shock to me too. I lived in Holland for the last year and a half and I've came home and house prices are way up and there's nothing nice on the market! Maybe come December/January there'll be better ones on the market!

I like flat hunting, what are your essentials? gsh? garden?

imissbrie · 23/10/2011 01:30

Lol that's ok giraffe! I'm typing on my phone its driving me mental! I used to think scotstoun was too far out but now I think its a happy medium, good transport links etc and if memory serves its quite nice and leafy? My ideal flat'd be a nice spacious tenament in broomhill/partick I'm sure I'll find something. Starting to go off the idea of the southside, aitch is right I'm better staying close to my mum. I just wanna move already I think my nesting instinct is already kicking in!

OP posts:
imissbrie · 23/10/2011 01:35

Yeah the usual gsh, double glazing, a bath, somewhere that looks uncluttered and child friendly, good public transport links .... I'm a sucker for high ceilings and bay Windows but i'd settle for a new build.

OP posts:
giraffesCantDookForApples · 23/10/2011 01:37

Scotstoun is a funny one - one side of Dumbarton road you have bin shed fires, junkies, kis chucking stones at windows. Other side of road youhave quiet houses that look very Jordanhill-ish!

If you are going for schools Broomhill gets a good rep, with some prefering it even over the highly coveted Jordanhill!

giraffesCantDookForApples · 23/10/2011 01:37

giraffesCantDookForApples · 23/10/2011 01:41
