Would you live there? Okay area or borderline dangerous??

I think it's nice, but I live in one of the less lovely parts of town. In Edinburgh you are never more than a few streets from somewhere lovely/rough Smile

That's true! We are debating moving there but as we are currently in a town the rough areas here are smaller and therefore seem less threatening.

Down by new haven harbour is lovely - not rough or scary at all. But then I've always liked a sea view....

The sea is a bonus alright. Very tempted.

If you have school age children check which catchment area you would be in - trinity and wardie primaries are both excellent but very busy. Victoria tends to be less popular although I know several people who have kids there and are happy, I think it's quite full too.

On another note - if you like cafes Porto and Fi is ACE !Smile

That is the one I spotted on streetview-thought it looked nice!

Just to the west of Newhaven, Trinity has the kind of big, old homes you get in places like the Grange on the south side. Wardie Primary is a good school, but I would recommend living to the east of Granton Road if you wanted to be in the Wardie catchment, purely because of the differing quality of the housing. Trinity Primary has really gone downhill since a new head took over a few years back. Too much fighting and I have heard of a few racist incidents in the last couple of years. Not somewhere I would recommend. Victoria Primary is meant to be good.

Trinity Academy is meant to be a good school. But be warned, - they like the high flyers and throw the rest onto the scrapheap, desperate to farm them out of school by the end of S4 so that they don't pull them down in the league tables with average results. It's not what I would call an inclusive school.

Thanks for your views there tree (and on Portobello). As it turns out some other swine bought the place we were interested in in Newhaven (really disappointed!!). We did have friends who used Trinity Primary and although they didn't love it they did recommend it over Victoria-everyone has different opinions I guess.
I quite like the look of Cramond but it just seems a bit far out on the buses. I see that you have recommended Firhill and I quite fancy living in that catchment but my husband isn't sure (property prices/distance from town).
Anyhow-we have moved an inch closer to putting our house on the market so should hopefully be in a better position to find a place SOMEWHERE soon.

Tree sorry to be rude but that is utter nonsense about Trinity Primary. It had an HMIE report last year which rates it as outstanding. It's pupils have one of the highest rates of achievement in the city.

igggi · 29/01/2012 14:19

I'd be surprised if any primary schools didn't record a couple of racist incidents a year. Don't know anything about the schools in question though!

Trinity Primary great. Newhaven area seems nice, as long as you don't drift too far towards either Muirhouse, or (perhaps) Leith.
Hope you find something soon.
