Hi all,

We have a fantastic opportunity to move to Cambridgeshire with dh's job so looking for advice on good areas to live. Have seen a lovely house in Ramsey but don't really know the area very well. Does anybody know the area or offer any advice on alternative areas within a 40 mile radius of Cambridge?

Thanks for your help x

Hello, I answered your post in the Peterborough forum :)

where is your DH going to work? and how is he going to commute - the traffic can be pretty bad so if say he was in central cambridge 40 miles might be a really long commute - the villages around cambridige are pretty nice and much cheaper than central cambridge

St Ives is really nice, pretty, riverside town, and it is easy to get onto the A14 to get to Cambridge, also the guided bus and normal buses go there. Also easy for getting north or south onto the A1 and for the A14 back to the Midlands area. And only a 10 min drive to Huntingdon and the trains to London, Kings cross is 45 mins away.

Ramsey strikes me as being really remote. Obviously this depends on where your DH is working.

I'd second St Ives as well, it is a very nice little town with good local shops and public transport, much cheaper than living in Cambridge itself as well but close enough to benefit. As Another said, traffic and parking in Cambridge are really terrible in central Cambridge, so consider this if ur DH is going to be working and commuting there.
Also look at Waterbeach which is a nice village just outside Cambridge (bit nearer than St Ives) and has excellent transport links. I'd agree that Ramsey is a bit out of the way and not as well connected as some other places.

I can recommend St Ives, I've lived in the area for 10 years, there are some lovely villages nearby. Hemingford Grey and Hemingford Abbots, Fenstanton and Hilton.

My husband commutes (approx 14 miles) to the centre of Cambridge near the station and his average journey time is around 30 to 40 minutes ( that's peak traveling times - it's more like 20 minutes when the roads are clear)

Hi there, I can reccomend Cherry Hinton, where I live. It's a small villiage so close to cambridge, it's classed as being Cambridge. Houses not too badely priced and some pretty good schools. Plus we have Cherry Hinton Hall, where the folk festival is held each year. Fab for picnics etc.
Otherwise I would second Waterbeach. Histon is lovely too, but not a great commute to Cambridge in terms of busy roads. Great Shelford is gorgeous but very, very pricey. Good luck :)
