Does anyone know of a book club in Stoke Newington? I fancy joining one but I don't know where to start.

I would also be interested.

lucylookout · 15/06/2011 16:26

Well that's four of us, and I think my friend wants to join one too. Shall we start our own!?

Let's do it! Should we see if anyone has any particular predilections for how these things run?

lucylookout · 15/06/2011 20:37

Yes, good idea. I was also going to google 'how to organise a book club' to see how it's done, but first hand experience tips would be great!

I guess we should probably think about how we choose the books. I gather that can sometimes be a little contentious..! And practicalities of the where and whens.

lucylookout · 16/06/2011 20:43

Maybe we could agree that everyone chooses a book initially. We could draw straws for the order we read them in. I'm sure people will choose books I'd never dream of reading but that'll hopefully be a good thing as I might learn something/enjoy it. As for venue, we could meet in people's houses (although that might not be ideal for all) so maybe neutral ground like a quiet pub. I don't know actually. And as for frequency, maybe we should agree that it will be say the second Tuesday of every month. No doubt no one will be able to make it every month, but at least we'd be able to plan around it a bit. I found a site on google that might be helpful. I'm on my phone at the mo but I'll try to post a link later.

Great. So where do we go from here? All pitch in with our ideas for first books and then set a time and place to meet or should we take things more slowly?!

gems111 · 11/07/2011 12:59

I'd be interested too!

LizXB · 12/07/2011 14:13

Ooh i'm a bit late, but may I join this?

teobaldo · 18/09/2011 21:28

Also late but I would not mind joining as well if still possible ? I did find a book club that meet at the defoe pub but seems quite big and I am a bit intimidated, i would rather prefer going to a new one. I have been part of a book club before and loved it but I have now moved area so cannot attend it anymore.

lucylookout · 13/10/2011 12:24

Sorry, I haven't been back on this for a while, but thought I'd come and let you all know that a Book Club has started at the Tea Rooms on Stoke Newington Church Street. We're meeting on the second Thursday of the month at 11am (until 12.30). The first meeting was today, and there are just four of us, so the more the merrier. We will be meeting next on the 10th November at 11am and have picked Hilary Mantel 'An experiment in Love' to read. It would be great if any of you could make it Smile

I'd like to come along, is that possible, my kids are grown-ups [allegedly] so don't know if that excludes me? If it's ok, please could you tell me the next meet up time and what you're reading? Thanks.

walkandwrite · 23/11/2011 17:50

also - do you know this?
