Anybody around here

Hi i'm just wondering if there is anyone around this area? I'm moving back near to Scunthorpe and don't really know anybody anymore. School and college friends are now all dotted around the country as we've all grown up and moved on.

I'm 29 and have a daughter aged 7 and son just over 2. OH works away alot - so would be great to have some adult conversations, other than with the dog or cat!

Just spotted this thread! Had no idea there were so many other people from our neck of the woods!

I'm 4 kids...and I have 4 kids and am not currently pregnant (hence no bump!)

DD1 - 5; DS1 - 4; DS2; 13 months; DD2 - 11 days
Before anyone asks - yes I am crazy (often seem to get asked this question...!)
Born in sunny Scunny...managed to escape for a few years but the property prices were so much cheaper than London, so came back 7 years ago..
Work part time as an assistant accountant when I'm not on maternity leave Grin

Peachy I guess our newest additions are very close in age!

Hello everyone. I'm from Belton, originally from Rotherham moved to the Isle of Axholme 4 years ago. Never posted anything before although I registered a while ago now, didn't really know how to....... I must admit I don't understand all the initials for things so I'm a little scared to post......

So Dd is back to school tomorrow, a different school as were not in the catchment for the nursery she went to (whole different thread !). Anybody else thinking "yes seven weeks of being an entertainment manager is over, welcome back normality !" Oh,what to do with my three child free hours a day ! x

Congrats to both 4kidsnobump and winterlover on your latest additions to your families. Hope you are both getting as much joy out of yours as I am with mine.

I have just booked my DS birthday party at fun forest at Brigg. Only been a couple of times before. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience of birthdays parties there.

Party was great as never been to fun forest before, food great for small fingers and party room good size. Staff very polite and helpful and cleared everything away quickly. Birthday girls mum was happy anyway !

Sorry not been online for a little while. We must have been @ fun forest on the same day rowgtfc. My ds party was on 16th Oct and I couldn't agree more. It was fabulous, the kids had a great time and the food was age appropriate. The staff even provided the candles for the cake as I forgot them, doh!

I'm looking at moving to Grimsby and am hoping I can pick your brains for a bit of local knowledge! Does anyone have anything they could tell me about the local schools? Ds would go to lisle Marsden which seems good but the secondary (oasis winteringham) seems to be erm....facing challenges. Do people go private or out of area or something? There's probably something I don't know, please enlighten me! I'd also like to know what it's like as a place to live, I've never seen such contrast in a place, with half a million pound houses two streets from really rundown areas, is it a nice place to live? Appreciate your help!

Hi. I've lived in Grimsby all my life and it suits me fine but got to admit its a bit of a dump. All secondary schools seem to be facing the same problems at the minute having just recently turned into acadamys. Dd is four so we're going to worry about it nearer the time but it would depend how old your ds is. I have friends whose dcs are at St James which is our local private school or there are a couple of Montessori schools which get good press. Dd goes to Queen Mary Ave Infants which gets an average Ofsted score but is a lovely school. Lisle Marsden often has a waiting list so it must be doing something right. Case of looking round and seeing what you make of it I guess. Grimsby too is what you make of it. It all depends where you socialise and who you mix with as to what bit of Grimsby you see! Hope that helps a bit. Anything else you need to know just ask !

Thanks Rowgtfc. Ds is only 1 so secondary schools have got some time to improve! The house is needs a vast amount of work and would be a 'house for life' to quote Kirstie Allsop, just not sure about the town. It's near people's park, which is so lovely... I can't actually put my finger on what's bothering me to be honest.

Would you advise someone (me!) to move there? Errr, I'm mid thirties, sahm at present but want to get back into a professional-ish career at some point. Dh is a teacher in Scunthorpe. We need toddler friendly places to go as I go nuts if stuck on the house all day.

Peoples Park is lovely ! Honestly, Grimsby is a dump it has the highest rates of this that and the other! However we 'over here' think the same about Scunthorpe! But, there are some really great people here, there is work if you look for it properly and me and dd have never been short of things to do and have made some really good friends doing them! I live in a rougher area near Sidney Park(think poor mans People Park) but we dont stay barricaded in the house and are out most days. Im rapidly approaching 40 so I'm old enough to be most of the school mums mother but the mix of mums at the groups round here range from teenagers to older than me! If I could get into gear to look for a professional job (got a degree) Im sure I could find one. As it is I work part time in a factory as it fits round dps job and means we dont pay for childcare. Wow,sorry I've written an essay!Hope it helps.

I used to live near People's Park! You're right, it is an odd mix (especially in that area) of great big houses, and run down dumps- but it's a great place to live, as it's really close to the town centre. Lisle Marsden is one of the best schools in the area, and always oversubscribed. Quite a lot of kids from there go on to local grammar schools.

row, can I ask which nursery your daughter went to? Only being nosy 'cos I teach in a Cleethorpes school!

Having read the admissions info for the grammars at Caistor and Louth I don't see how a kid from Grimsby would get into them to be honest, they both have catchment areas and then places are awarded by closeness to the school/test score. So being that far away surely the test score would have to be exceptional- but I may be wrong as the private schools both push their 11+ preparation so presumably that means there's a good chance of their kids getting in. Confusing. This is of course all me avoiding looking at the work on the house itself, which is well scary!

Just speaking from personal experience, I went to Caistor Grammar and there were loads of Grimsby kids there. Because the school is in a very rural area, there aren't actually that many kids living within the catchment area, I don't think, which leaves quite a few spaces for children from further away. You do get a lot of kids from the private schools there, as they apparently do a lot of 11+ preparation, but you also get a good number from 'ordinary' state schools too (like me!).

Ah that makes sense. I was just looking at it on the map and thinking 'well that's miles away- no chance!'
Guess I'll have to get back to worrying about the house, now I've finished worrying about secondary schooling for a one year old [nutter]

I grew up in Scartho, went to Toll bar school which is quite a good secondary school but quite far from People's Park.

The park and immediate are are fine there used to be a lot of vandalism, my parents nearly bought a house there but at the time there was violence in the park every night as the surrounding area is quite bad going towards town. One incident I remember is that someone caught most of the fish in the pond, beheaded them and left them lying around everywhere in the park for people to find.

I haven't lived there for 8 years so don't know what it is like now.

Peoples park has had a million pound revamp and I believe it has security now. Going towards town is rough though !

I'm back at work now, so things have got very hectic round here with trying to juggle work and taking DS to nursery!
