I know there is one is Park Circus and think there may be one in Shawlands.

Does anyone know of any other preferably to the south in the south of Glasgow?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried contacting the Alliance Francaise ?

nulgirl · 24/05/2011 16:57

The alliance Francaise runs classes in shawlands and park circus. Don't think they do any others. You may find a private group who do classes but i would be wary about their quality. At that age it is important that they are immersed with teachers whose native language is French. Rote learning is not very effective. My dd goes to the kindergarten class at park circus which is very good. There is a mix of children with both English and French as their first language.

How old is your child and do they have any French already? My dd goes because my dh is French but hasn't really spoken French to the kids

letsgetloud · 24/05/2011 21:49

Thanks ladies. I would go with alliance francaise but just don't want to try and park etc. in Park Circus. I can't do public transport as have other kids to drop places on a saturday.

Shawland would be much handier for me but alliance francaise told me they only do classes in Park Circus. I will check again with them tomorrow.

My child is 5 and in primary 1. She doesn't know alot of french, just what she picked up from nursery and school but she loves it. She constantly talks to me in french and all to herself!!

I just think she would get alot from a french class. Noone in the house speaks french so she gets no stimulation from us.

The kindergarten class for 3-6 year olds is on at park circus on a Saturday morning. The parking there is dead easy because it is mostly offices around there so there are loads of spaces and you don't pay at the weekend. it's like a ghost town up there. My dd really enjoys it. The woman who runs the class lives in shawlands and her kids go to battlefield primary so she may know of other groups which are close.

letsgetloud · 24/05/2011 22:54

Thanks nulgirl.

Hope you don't mind me asking how much you pay for the class? Also, what time is your daughter's class and do you know if they run over the school holiday period?

Does your daughter enjoy the class?

The class runs for 2 semesters (sep to Feb and then Feb to June) so is about to finish for the summer but they are running an immersion week of classes the last week in June. Think it is three hours a day for five days and will cost £65.

The class is on 10 until 12 on a Saturday morning. I can't remember how much it costs but it isn't cheap. Think about £175 for a semester. Works out about £10 a week.

I know I sound like I work for them or something but am not trying to do a sales job :). For us it is really important that the kids learn French so they can speak to their grandparents etc in France. Wouldn't need to do any of this if dh actually spoke to the kids in French.

letsgetloud · 24/05/2011 23:21

Thanks.

That is alot of money. Will phone them tomorrow and see what they say.

She does other out of school activities as do our other kids so that on top is alot.

What a shame your dh doesn't talk in french to the kids

Yes it's not cheap. Tbh I don't think we'd pay for it if it was just a hobby/ interest. I wouldnt be paying that for spanish class for example. It is good value for money as it is very well run but it is a big upfront investment.

Hi
I don't run a class but I could help on a one-to-one basis.
I have a degree in French and lived in France for a couple of years -though that was a while back and I'm no longer fluent! But I'm tutoring a friend's daughter (she's in S2) and I'm certainly able to tutor up to Highers level.

I've got three DC at primary school (who hate it when I speak in French!) but I've got some spare time. Let me know if you're interested. I live in Giffnock btw.

La Jolie Ronde do classes in Shawlands on a Saturday morning - it's at a school - can't remember the name of it, but if you googled them I'm sure you'd find it.

I also saw a notice up in the Tramway for classes - on the noticeboard in the cafe. Hang on a minute, I may have a taken a note of it...right, here we are:
La Maison du Sud. Newlands South Church, Riverside rd, thursdays 10-11.30, so it must be for pre-schoolers. The contact phone number was the Alliance Francaise though.

letsgetloud · 25/05/2011 13:24

Thanks hunch but she is only 5 so don't really want her to have a private tutor.

Thanks mne- Someone from La Jolie Ronde had forwarded my details to the one in Shawlands but noone contacted me. Though because you gave me that info I found out they run one in Newton Mearns, much closer to me, so I have contacted them for details.

Thanks again everyone for the info, much appreciated.

What a great thread, I've been looking for the same thing in the same area but for an 11 year old so I'll definitely be following some of the links given and maybe even contact Hunch if she doesn't mind for some help over the summer :)

imissbrie · 02/11/2011 16:15

I take it no state schools have French in their curriculum in Glasgow from an early age? I've been googling but I cant find anything apart from tutors and lessons out with school lessons :/

midnightexpress · 02/11/2011 16:18

Our school starts French in p5 or 6 I think (South Lanarkshire)

imissbrie · 02/11/2011 16:36

Apparently the younger they start the easier they pick it up, so I had hoped maybe for younger than that (we have a lot of French relatives). But its good to know there are classes aimed at younger children out there anyway :)

suzikettles · 02/11/2011 16:39

imissbrie - there's a French toddler group that meets in Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church every Wednesday - Club Picoti

trickydickie · 02/11/2011 22:37

immissbrie- when you say Glasgow, do you mean Glasgow City Council?
Areas of Glasgow that are within East Renfrewshire Council teach nursery age children French. I don't think they do it in there anti school year but they do in their pre school year. Then French forms part of the curriculum until they leave school.

My daughter was taught German in her primary school down South from the age of 4 when she started school. It is such a shame that not all schools do this. I don't think Glasgow City Council schools teach it until Secondary, but maybe wrong.

A lady teaches a wee French class on a Wednesday evening in a church hall next to Newton Means shopping Centre. It is just on for half an hour but she teaches from pre school age to secondary.

lizziebennet · 03/11/2011 10:08

They teach French from P1 at Hillhead Primary - no idea if it's the same at all the schools across Glasgow

imissbrie · 03/11/2011 20:18

Really lizzie? We are based in the west end, that's fantastic news!

lizziebennet · 07/11/2011 12:01

Aaah, so I checked this at the weekend as my eldest niece - who's in P3 at Hillhead - hadn't mentioned her French classes for a while. I asked if she was still having French lessons at school and she said she wasn't. No idea if this is a temporary thing or a result of cutbacks or something.

trickydickie · 07/11/2011 19:07

Well, my info is probably out of date. My 23 year old neice went to Notre Dame Primary and she got french for one year (but then they stopped it, maybe due to funds)

My friend has children in Jordanhill Primary who don't get french until p7 or 1st year (definately towards later stages of primary or early secondary). Although, she has mentioned that children joining Jordanhill from Glasgow City Council schools are ahead with their french, as they get french from an earlier age.

So sorry imissbie, like you I am not sure what schools in Glasgow get french and from what age.

I have neices in primary schools in Ibrox, so will ask when I next see them. (If you haven't found out before).

imissbrie · 10/11/2011 01:51

aw thats very kind of you trickydickie! it seems the norm is Primary 7 though.
