Hi everyone, just joined mumsnet and was wondering if anyone can shed any light on what happens at a first antenatal appt? I'm 12 weeks with my first baby and have no clue!! Got a letter for my first appt at the Southern general, not seen a midwife at all yet and can't get through on the phone to ask what will happen at this appt. Really hoping to get a scan but some friends telling me I might not get a 12 wk scan Confused, don't know anyone who has had a baby at this hospital, any advice would be much appreciated Smile

dont know how sgh works, bur wanted to say congratulations
1st antenatal is booking appt and they take your history
medical,social,obstetric history
some general pg advice, and you carry your notes
blood tests,uriine tests
ante natal classes on offer
may get a scan then and there depends on their policies,or may get future date

discuss any queries issues you have also

Hi, Congratulations!

I'm 20 weeks and have my antenatal appointments at the Southern. You'll get a scan - very exciting, and will also have an appointment with a midwife. I found that on the day of my 12 week appt, it was very busy, with lots of people waiting for scans. I think it's a clinic which runs on a 1st come, 1st served basis, so there can be a bit of a wait. You should get a couple of pics of your baby too.

The appointment with the midwife runs through all the "do's and don'ts" (a bit late if you ask me, they give you all the info we probably should be given as soon as we find out we're pregnant). They will take some blood samples, and ask you about the tests you want to have.

You'll also be asked to provide a urine sample - following your scan, as you should try to have a full bladder for this (so you get a clearer image I think?), and will get your height and weight recorded.

I took along a list of questions to ask, as I felt that by 12 weeks I had so many questions I would never remember them all! The midwife was really helpful, and took the time to answer all my questions. I was also booked into parentcraft classes, which apparently fill up far in advance.

You should get an appointment while you're there for your next scan which will be at 20 weeks.

Hope this helps, enjoy! :)

Thank you both for replying!

Elainerob - Its good to hear from someone who is going to the same hospital and congratulations on your little bump too! most of my friends had their kids at the Queen Mothers.

I'm so happy to hear I will get a scan, can't wait to see my baby Grin

My appointment is first thing in the morning so hopefully I will be one of the first in the queue!

Thanks again for your info Smile

Hi congratulations! I had my little girl at the Southern General 6 months ago. the antenatal appointments were great with friendly staff and they get through everyone quickly, think i was in and out within half an hour every time. If you are driving there the parking is a nightmare, i left the car and got a taxi once because of it. Lovely midwives for the birth too. Good luck so exciting!

I had my first at the queen mums currently 36 weeks with no 2 and will be at the southern. I found the parking ok buy the wait to be seen was a nightmare!
At my 12 week appointment It was for 9:30 it was nearly 1pm by the time I left! Waited ages fr the scan then even longer to see the midwife. Appointmnet will be what others have said, a talk through the dos and donts, blood urine etc. Just take something to drink and read and be prepares for a wait. Oh and it's roasting hot in there too!

Congratulations Smile!

I have nothing much to add as I was a dyed-in-the-wool Queen Mum's mum and my having-babies days are over , but may I just recommend Prof Alan Cameron as a superb human being, doctor and obstetrician should you have the ill fortune to require much medical input.

Hoping this recommendation is utterly superfluous and you will have a lovely trouble-free pregnancy with an easy delivery leaving you with a bouncing baby.

They will also discuss screening tests with you to help you decide whether or not to have any tests done for Down's and other chromosomal abnormalities. Please remember a risk is just a risk and not a diagnosis. It is entirely up to you whether you want to have screening or not and whether or not you would want to consider diagnostic testing (ie amnio) should you be given a 'high risk'.

Hi!

May I join in?
I've just got my BFP over the Easter weekend and only hubby and best friend (who's also pregnant at 12/40) know so far. I'll be booking at SGH in the next few weeks as I'm 4+3/40 at the moment and worried it's all a bit too soon to get excited.
Really good to hear how things work from people who've been through it all recently.

mum2b30 · 26/04/2011 17:45

Hey everyone, thanks for all your input!
Congratulations to everyone who is expecting...

Fifitrixabelle, I was the same as you, found out early and wasn't sure how to feel as heard that its best to wait until the 12wk point to be sure everything is OK. I spent weeks impatiently waiting for the 12wk appointment to come through! I'm glad I joined mumsnet as there always seems to be someone in the same boat and answered a lot of questions I had about the booking appt. I will be on here until the end and probably after my baby arrives!

I have now been to the Southern for the booking appt.
My appt was for 9.20 and I was there for 2 hours as it said on the letter. Had my scan first(amazing) then went through to a different area where I gave blood and urine samples and spoke to a midwife. The staff are very nice and friendly. The midwife will give you your first Bounty pack with loads of info in it and a book called Ready Steady Baby which takes you through each stage of pregnancy and what you can/cannot eat, it would have been handy if I had got that book earlier!! Ive not to go back to the Southern until my 20wk scan, the rest of the midwife appts are at the Western in the old Beatson building.

You might be the same Fifitrixabelle. Good Luck and try not to worry, just try to relax(hard to do I know!) Drink water before you go to your appointment as I hadn't drank anything and when asked to give the urine sample I was there for ages! Blush

I've got Prof Cameron too Pacificdogwood, haven't met him but his name is on my notes.

Interestingly, I was seen by the consultant at my booking-in appointment (at the QM's) - but I think that was only because I have a really distinctive surname and the consultant wanted to know if I was the daughter of the radiologist who used to work at Yorkhill (I was Wink).

All the best to the newbies and hope you enjoy Mumsnet! :)

Hi everyone,

@mum2b30 - thanks so much for the chat- just spoke with GP and he's referred me for booking at the southern.

Trying to keep sane as getting lots of pelvic cramping since implantation but having exhausted mumsnet & Google this seems reasonably normal. Messes with your head a bit and keep thinking the worst.

Look forward to hearing everyone's progress over the coming weeks.
