Moving to Glasgow?

Hi ladies I am new here and looking for some help.

My dh has been offered a job in Glasgow.

Its a great offer for him, more money for our little family but would mean moving from a small town in Ireland to Glasgow.

The job would be city centre maybe 5 minutes walk from Central Station.

Now I need to start looking at maybe moving the family over there. We have two boys age 2 and 5. Older one is due to start school here in September.

Where on earth do I go to find out about living in Glasgow?

Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance

Well do you want to live out in the country, in the suburbs or in the town? City centre is a great location as it means you have the choice of anywhere near a station

Do you want to live south of Glasgow so you are closer to the ferry home or doesn't that matter?

And what's your budget and what are you looking for in a house? Are you selling up in Ireland or will you be renting here? Will your dhs employers pay for you to rent for a while so you can see where you like before committing to buy?

Schools here start about 18 august so you will need to get a move on in you want your Lo to start at the beginning of term

If you are thinking of buying please note that the conveyancing and legals systems are different here and you should use a lawyer who is familiar with scots law

Thanks Kristina, its good to get an outside view on things.

The offer only came Friday afternoon so we wont have full financial details till Monday. His company are worldwide and people are always moving so there will be relocation money and help but again details to come next week.

We would keep our house here and rent it out and rent there. We live in an estate of 70 houses in a town of about 25,000 people so this would be very different for us. Suburbs I think would be the best for us. Not looking at city centre living with the 2 boys and dont want to be too isolated either. Would like to stick with what we know. I suppose the school would be the big issue, we would be looking for a Catholic school.

God its all so up in the air I might have been a bit quick to post but thank you for your reply!

a lot really depends on your budget renfrewshire and west ends are "nicest" areas and tend to be more affluent so possibly better schools. but TBH my DS is only 2yo ATM so not looked into schools.

would also depend on how long your DH is happy to commute.

if your looking to east of glasgow Uddingston Bothwell and Mount vernon are good areas.

Bothwell & Mount vernon tend to be expensive and Mount Vernon is surrounded by slightly rougher areas.

East Renfrewshire has some of the best state school in scotland, RC and non denominational. If you rented in clarkston or giffnock your dh would be 20 mins on the train into town

I'm guessing you would be about £850-900 a month to rent a 3 bed house or semi.plus about £200??? For council tax

South of the city would be better for the ferry home.

There is also Ayrshire if you want to be more rural. Not so sure about catholic schools there, you would need to look at the council website

There are very few private catholic schools, fern hill in rutherglen on the south isde of Glasgow and st aloyoius in Glasgow city centre
