Walking to school

Just wanted to ask a bit of an odd question. Do many of you walk your kids to school? We're looking at a property that is half a mile to the local school. We've done a walk through on google maps etc. and there are good footpaths and so on and it's very flat, of course, but I'm just wondering for how much of the year it would actually be possible to walk the half mile to school?

Don't laugh at me! I'm Australian. We're not used to the icy stuff! Blush

I would say in Cambridge walking or cycling are the most common methods of getting to school. Walking half a mile would be absolutely fine all year round.

Is it in the city or a surrounding village? We live in the city and our school is more than half a mile away and we don't drive, we cycle.

yes all the time - and it would proably be quicker than driving as roads near schools can get clogged up

our school is about 1/2 mile away (Cambs village).
Mostly I drive - because I am on my way past the school to/from work, but on days off, or if I get home early then we walk.
Takes me about 6 mins on my own, and about 12 with the kids.

oh - how much of the year - all of it!

Well, that would mean that on average you might be slipping about for a day or two per year. Walking still seems to be the norm in my area - and when they get to secondary they walk without coats on through the worst weather!

Great, thanks for all the advice! Have been scaring myself silly watching cars sliding on black ice on youtube (we don't get much black ice in the sub-tropics!). Also compounding the fear -- Aussie surgeon friend fell on an icy footpath in the UK last year and broke her wrist.

Hopefully the kids will be able to cope with half a mile. Then again, they almost froze when we took them to Tasmania once in Summer, so will remind myself to pack a big stick to urge them on with!
