Babies with gastric reflux

Hi,

My 3 month old has fairly severe gastric reflux disease (he cries a lot, screams during feeds, refuses feeds etc) and I was wondering if there are any other mums in the area whose baby is suffering from this? It really is such a hard thing to deal with and it would be great to meet some people who could relate, as it is hard to understand unless you have experienced it yourself.

Hi Rachel

Sorry to hear of your difficulties now.

I'm just wondering if you lo has any med's for this? My DD - 13 wks - has Infant Gaviscon and is a completely different baby now. She previously screamed most of the day or tried to feed/refused to feed etc so I really can sympathise with you.

I know there are people whose babies didn't respond to IG but have other med's instead.

I'm sure you needn't suffer this without some sort of medical help?

xxx

Thanks for your reply. He is on gaviscon, domperidone and omeprazole (our house is like a chemist!) because he didn't respond to other treatments such as gaviscon on its own. Only been on this combination for a few days so hoping they will kick in soon. Are you breastfeeding? I find that he wants to feed and will for about 5 mins then comes off screaming and won't stay on when I try to put him back on.

xx

Hi,
Ds2 was on omeprazole as well, and we ended up being prescribed a milk thickener so that the milk would stay down. You can either use it with expressed milk or formula. If he's not responded to the combination he's on within a week I would ask about the milk thickener. It made all the difference to ds2.
Hope he gets better soon. Has he had this since birth?

Yes I am bf - exactly like you, my DD fed, came off, screamed for a while, fed again, came off. It is an absolute nightmare. I really feel for you if you still have this going on - it nearly finished me off. I would definitely try and change again if this doesn't work within another few days. Good luck xxx

Have either of you tried cranial osteopathy, our four year old had gastric reflux when he was a baby and we tried all sorts of things to keep things down, not least to save everything in the house from being vomited over.
After the first session we noticed a difference and after two visits I wasn't even using gaviscon any more.
I wish both of you the very best of luck sorting this out as I know it is a complete pain not only having a hungry baby but also the constant washing!!!

Yes - I have been meaning to post again to say we have used CO. I couldn't actually say which worked because the diagnosis and commencement of the med's coincided with the 3rd app't but we definitely saw a change after the first and 2nd app't and after 3rd she was like a different baby.

I was going to suggest trying CO and so I'm glad mimimouse thought so too!

Hiya, yes my dd 5wks has it and is on gav,dom peridone and ranatidine, she is not sick but suffers from the acid, lots of face pulling and squirming when awake, only time she is happy s when feeding or sleeping which fortunately she does,so its obviously not under control, seeing peads at battledown on wed so was wondering re milk change or meds review, she is still only 7lb 11oz and a slow feeder, would be up for a coffee if anyone fancies it,am a little bored on mat leave already.

minimouse1975 · 07/03/2011 12:25

its OK to be admit to being bored on mat leave - although small babies are little miracles they are not exactly scintillating company are they!?!

My DS has silent reflux and we have been for CO (great lady in Ciren) and I am using a homeopathic remedy called Colic Care. It was expensive but seems to work and we have also bought a wedge for him to sleep raised, with white noise in the background!!. Can't say which of these helped but we went from no sleep in a week when he was a month old to now sleeping 5 - 6 hours at night at 7 weeks. He still has some major episodes but they seem to now last for much shorter periods.

Also it seems worse when I have strong flavoured food as am combined breast and formula feeding. I ate raw red onion on Saturday and paid the price all night until 7am on Sunday.

Hope some of this is useful info.

We have been to a cranial osteopath but it had no effect. Meds not working so going back to the doc again on weds. Thinking perhaps it is an intolerance to cows milk so may try going soya and dairy free to see if that helps. Happy to meet for coffee sometime x

My CO suggested a goats milk formula called Nanni which you can get in Waitrose.

Maybe we should arrange a coffee after Race Week is over and swap notes! x
