Hi,

I need information on the best places to live within commuting distance of Edinburgh. I've got 2 boys: nearly nursery 1 age, and primary 4. We are currently looking at Stirling, Falkirk sort of areas. I am preferring Stirling at the moment. My partner will be working in central Edinburgh, and is concerned about the commute, and costs. I have been searching all the info I can about schools and surrounding areas, but would really appreciate some help. If you have any info or can point me to some info, I would be very grateful.

Its a long commute Stirling to Edinburgh.
Driving in peak times gets you caught up in the congestion coming into Edinburgh, the M9 is almost at a standstill around Hermiston Gate, outwith peak times I'd say it was over an hours drive.
The trains will come into the heart of the city but I dont know the cost/frequency

Is there no where nearer Edinburgh you'd fancy?

www.espc.com/ for property prices
[[

I think citylink run a bus service too

Thanks ratspeaker,

He will be going by train not car - we've looked into the cost and duration - about 1 hour 20 mins, including walk to and fro. Citylink say the bus journey is 1 hour 5 mins.

The problem is that we are not sure what other areas are as good for schools and family facilities, and are closer to Edinburgh than Stirling. Which we know a bit having visited it a few times when we lived in Glasgow for a while about 5 years ago.

Edinburgh is an amazing city to live in and many of the surrounding towns and villages are beautiful. If your looking at properties in Stirling then I guess it's not a cost issue as Stirling is, as expensive as Edinburgh.

I live in Liberton in Edinburgh, love it up here but I hope to move over to corstorphine to be nearer friends in the future. Or Portobello, I love the beach.

Linlithgow is only a short train ride away and is a stunning place to live. Dunfermline is just across the bridge and you can get allot for your money there.

Thanks Confuzzeled,

Cost is a major issue for us. Must have given the wrong impression. When are you moving out of your house? ;)

I loved living in edinburgh, but we now live in East lothian, just outside the main city centre, i love it here, cheaper housing and easy to get to the city. My husband works in central Edinburgh, it takes him 30 mins by car, or if you get train its much less!!! :)

grotbag · 13/02/2011 19:24

Thanks LisamumtoJake, I love East Lothian too, and we are looking there. However we have friends in North of Glasgow and are concentrating on the west side of Edinburgh if possible, thats why I mentioned Stirling in the first place. Which part of East Lothian are you in?

I'm near Tranent, in an ickle village :) before i lived in west edinburgh, near Ratho? Good for communting too!

ratspeaker · 13/02/2011 21:40

What about Mid Lothian
Dalkeith, Loanhead, Penicuik?
No trains but bus links into Edinburgh

RattysPicnic · 13/02/2011 21:43

I live in Midlothian and would recommend it as very easy to get into town. But it does depend on where your DH's offices are?

rookiemater · 14/02/2011 22:18

Our friends live in Dunblane and it seems lovely, roughly same commuting distance as Stirling

ratspeaker · 15/02/2011 12:10

I must admit at first I thought it was a long away from work Stirling to Edinburgh
But if you can get a train direct into the centre where the office is, its a lot easier than driving
The roads around the city get very congested at peak times I know a 6.5mile journey to home takes about 45 minutes in the rush hour by car, in stop start traffic

Thank you all. I am checking out your suggestions and also around Falkirk/Polmont. Have been re-looking at Tranent and surrounding areas since you have recommended it LisamumtoJake. Do you know anything sbout Windyghoul primary school? Its brand new, and sounds so appropriate for my kids:0 Their website looks great, but I can't seem to find much more about it. We are popping up to look at various areas tomorrow, staying over till Saturday. Will be keeping up to date though. If you can think of any other tips....
