Hi, I'm thinking of moving my daughter to BGS and wondered if anyone had any advice, experience of parking there for school runs etc? School looks good but as with a lot of places in Bristol it's a question of parking! Thanks in advance and apologies if this question has already been asked but I'm new to Mumsnet.

parking is pretty awful I think because no-one will park 10 minutes walk away and walk. they all jostle right outside the school.

You're right it does look pretty awful. I have no problem with parking away from the school and walking, I'm hoping someone with knowledge of the school or area could suggest the best place!! It's more stress fighting for a space close by to something than parking further away and walking. Fortunately my girls don't mind walking.

I would park in Berkeley Square and then cross in front of the museum and walk up university road. Are you too far to walk to school?

I think parking around BGS has just got much easier.

There's a new residents' parking scheme in the Kingsdown area which covers some of the streets very close to BGS (eg Tyndall's Park Road, part of Woodland Road, St Michael's Park) - you now have to park in marked bays, and either have a resident's parking permit or get a ticket from the machine, where the options are 15mins (free), 1hr (£1) or 2hrs (£2). The 15 min option should be just enough time to get a child in or out of school and back to the car.

So far there are always loads of spaces when I drive past, as I think those roads used to be full of people parking for free and leaving the cars all day to walk to work.

There are also parking metres on the roads directly either side of BGS (Elton Road and University Road, lower half of Woodland Road) where there is no free period, but you can pay in 6-minute increments. They tend to be quite busy, though.

Thank you all for the info, it's really, helpful. We live on the south side of Bristol so not within walking distance and our daughter is too young for the bus. I would consider taking her on the bus but that presents a whole other set of issues.
We are hoping to set up a car share if things work out but we will still need to take our turn and consider the parking.

If you live outside the city check with the school about their own bus service - when I was there (admittedly a hundred years ago) they hired coaches to bus kids in from outlying areas like Clevedon etc. for a reasonable price. Not me mind you, I walked up from Bedmo and developed thighs like a gazelle Grin

My husband went to BGS and bused in from Nailsea every day, which he still complains about now! Oh the woe. ;)

We're planning to send our two there as well so I've been thinking about the logistics of actually getting them there as well.

We went to look around BGS this year and were given the impression that they no longer run their own bus service because the school is easily accessible by public bus routes!

HeroShrew: My Dad was an Art teacher at BGS in the early 90s. Can't remember how old you are though?

arcticwind · 08/02/2011 14:12

There are special buses from places to QEH which is quite close - would that be any good?

arcticwind · 08/02/2011 14:12

PS have you thought of Clifton High - great school and no parking issues at all
