Which parts of town to look at?

DH grew up in Glasgow, in Burnside, and we're pondering moving back from down south. Which areas are nice in terms of space for kids to play, good schools, easy access to city (trains etc), and which should we not bother looking at?

Sorry to be so vague but DH's not much help at all, just knows the place he grew up! His brother lives in Pollokshields which always strikes me as very nice but ideally we'd like a place with a garden rather than a flat. All suggestions and comments, however biased Wink, very gratefully recieved!

NB we currently have one dd age 2 and another arriving imminently so would be looking to move in the next couple of years, primary schools the main concern rather than secondary at this stage.

We live in uddingston which I think is lovely. 15 minutes to central on the train, close to m74 for heading south m8 for east, also easy to travel north. There are some lovely areas, and good schools, but still has a village atmosphere. 200k would get you a 3/4 bed with garden.

I grew up in Pollokshields and some parts of it are really lovely. It was designed in 2 parts, either side of Shields Rd. The east side is mainly tenement flats, so no gardens to speak of, and the west side is big mansion houses, many of which have been split into flats over the years (big gardens here). It has some beautiful churches and did have lovely parks when I was little. Maxwell Park was my old stomping ground as a kid. It's really handy for the city centre and is well served with trains and buses.

JumpJockey · 04/01/2011 15:44

Thanks - will look more closely into both of those then :)

East Renfrewshire is further out by train only 25 max mins to centre of town, fantastic schools, nice houses. What budget and size houses are you looking at.

seb1 · 04/01/2011 15:52

East Ren Schools

JumpJockey · 05/01/2011 09:24

I think DH would rather be in the city itself (hankers after being near Byres Road!) but I'd be happy with a village/small town as I grew up in one so will take a look further out as well, East Renfrewshire sounds good. We're probably looking at 4 beds minimum, budget about 400k, maybe 450 at a stretch. Where we live now that would get a small semi of the 3.5 bed kind with a handkerchief for a garden so the Glasgow houses we've been looking at are massive in comparison!

Ooh you wont belive how much further your money would go up here.. check these out

pool room

top end of budget

colie · 05/01/2011 22:24

If dh fancies Byres Road then there are some gorgeous areas there where you will easily get a 4 bed for that amount of money.

Jordanhill school has an excellent reputation and you could get a house in catchment for that. Or else you could look at North Kelvinside area, Cleveland, Hillhead.

Sorry, I don't know much about villages etc. If you want to be near city centre I can't think of any village type area that close to city centre.

i live in east renfrewshire so like seb1 would highly recommend it Wink

Another vote for East ren here. we moved up from London about 5 years ago and live in est ren. Giffnock/newton mearns and Clarkston are all lovely areas although parts of Newton mearns are a bit cut off from train transport. Love the area and have settled in really well.

fledtoscotland · 10/01/2011 23:17

Another vote for East Ren here - Williamwood has fantastic results equal to that of private schools. The catchment for it is Clarkston/giffnock which are nice areas and your budget will buy a decent size house

bethelbeth · 11/01/2011 00:37

There's some new townhouses being built in the fab catchment area of east renfrewshire (next to williamwood train station) which suit your budget. The builder is Mctaggart and meikel.

god no to east ren, west end all the way, you'll get something nice for your money for sure. it's all stepford wives in east ren... Wink

You might be able to find something in your budget in Pollokshields that meets your spec and is in your budget. We currently live in a four bedroom conversion (ie the top half of one of the big villas) and I think that is what it is currently worth (although not what we paid 10 years ago Grin). We have a fabulous large garden and live on a lovely quiet street.

The main local primary schools, dependng on where you are, are Glendale Primary which has an excellent reputation (very ethnically mixed but deals with it very well: 60% English as an Additional Language but as a result has loads of extra support and is an example of best practice nationwide on how to deal with the challenges of multiple languages) or Pollokshields Primary (98% English as an Additional Language - most English speakers put in placing requests for Glendale). Further SOuth, there is also Shalwands Primary. Glendale has a strange catchment area: there is a sort of dogs leg that reuslts in half a street being in the catchment for Pollokshields, but the other half being in Glendale - even though Pollokshields is still the closest primary.

prettybird · 15/01/2011 23:12

Very similar to our house - although our dining kitchenn is much bigger and we still have the original marble fireplace surround in the living room (although I still need to replace the horrible gas thing that was put in back to the proper cast iron insert). Interesting that it assumes private independent schooling - when both Shawlands and Glendale Primary Schools are good schools. But some othe people in West Pollokshields are a bit snobbish Wink

bethelbeth · 16/01/2011 19:22

Lol Aitch I think I must be the least stepford wifey person in the world. Everyone I know in East Ren is artsy fartsy and don't have 'proper' jobs.
Or have I vastly misjudged the place?

carmmunock is a lovely village about 20mins from centre by car with a lovely school that has small classes so good teacher contact. Also busby and giffnock are nice areas. Good luck with the move Smile

Normantebbit · 18/01/2011 20:23

My kids go to West End schools and they are fine - it's a misconception that people go private. Our local school Hillhead Primary is great, has a new building in the park and a good team of teachers. There are also Hyndland, Notre Dame and Kelvindale primaries, all well liked. I would visit and judge from there.

I live in the west end and it's great for kids. Like a village, very social and everyone seems to live within walking distance of each other and the shops. We lived in London before, but have a better quality of life here. Made many friends and all very happy Smile

Come and live in Bearsden, which is actually East Dumbartonshire. We moved up from down south two years ago and like you, considered other places but here is by far the best place to be! 25 mins from Glasgow centre by train and and a short drive but it's also on the edge of the countryside. 15 mins drive from Byres Rd. East Dumbartonshire consistently has some of the best schools in the country. Nice big houses too, modern or old sandstone. The town cenre has a few nice little shops / cafes / M&S and there's a decent Bistro too. It's a big area though so just watch out for the flight path bits which are towards Bearsden centre itself. We are about to produce "offspring" and settled here because it is good for kids and families. Lots of the residential areas are really nice and quiet and people are happy to still let their kids play out in the street!

weegiemum · 20/01/2011 19:22

We're SOuthside - close to PB - can't recommend it highly enough. We are 8 mins on the train to city centre, 5 mins walk to Pollok park, kids are at the Gaelic school (ages your kids are, look into it).

I love the Southside, I like going to the West End but am glad I don't live there, I'm not posh enough!

JennyPiccolo · 20/01/2011 19:28

is there a gaelic school in the southside?

FalachFead · 21/01/2011 08:44

No, not yet. Plans in the pipeline but are a good few years off. I think it will be Glendale(?) in the Pollokshields.. The Glasgow Gaelic School is on Berkeley Street, Finnieston.

RipMacWinkle · 21/01/2011 08:48

Hi not sure if you mean primary or secondary but there is also a gaelic primary in East Kilbride. It's part of the Mount Cameron primary school campus.
