DD (8) does drama on Saturday mornings with the Pauline Quirke Academy (website here which uses rooms at Redmaids school in Westbury. She's been doing it for a couple of years and really likes it - it's three hours of drama, film/tv, and musical theatre, ie show tunes etc. Quite pricy though - about £80 a month.

I think Stagecoach (similar set-up to PQA, but even pricier) do something around the Cotham area, and there is or was some kind of drama club actually run by Cotham school, though I'm not sure if that was specifically for older primary children who were likely to be going to Cotham for secondary. Worth checking?

(I'm afraid I have no idea about the accessibility of any of these things, Riven, but they are probably in the wrong area for you anyway.)

Yes, £80 a month - £20 a week for a 3-hour session, with several specialist teachers. I did say it was pricey, but when I was looking into things Stagecoach was more, so it seems to be around the going rate.

She used to do ballet and tap, and this is more expensive per hour than dance classes, but the groups are smaller, she doesn't need all the leotards, tutus, ballet/tap shoes etc, we don't get charged extra for costumes for shows, or for the DVDs with their productions on etc (the ballet school seemed to rely on making lots of money from DVDs and photos of productions), so it works out similar in the end.

I think the cheaper option for drama is the after-school groups some primary schools run, which are shorter sessions and have one teacher for much larger groups (and they don't have to pay room hire).

Feministparent - did you really mean to link to Bay State Psychological associates?

TheFeministParent · 23/11/2010 20:06

Nope.....oh shit.

here

I've heard th Old Vic is quite good and cheaper.

exexpat · 23/11/2010 20:13

That makes a bit more sense, feministparent! Site mainly still under construction though so hard to see what they offer.

I didn't know the old vic did classes, but just found the details here. I think the tobacco factory also does short holiday courses, but nothing regular as far as I know.

anagrammy · 23/11/2010 21:38

Thanks for the ideas! Will look into them. Can't quite get to grips witht he bpsa website or the old vic one.
general thought: why are these things always so expensive?

I know, we have 3 DDs who all want to do it and we've had to say no :(

exexpat · 23/11/2010 22:41

The old vic one looks more reasonable - only an hour for the younger ones, so obviously less than paying for the 3-hour PQA/Stagecoach sessions, might be worth trying a term to see how they get on with it?

I think the cost for the other ones is mainly staff, equipment and room hire, though of course they are run as profit-making businesses so are bound to be more expensive than ones run by schools, local councils or theatres.

The Old Vic is cheap and frankly absolutely brilliant, dd has been going for 3 years now and loves it, it's real shame it's not possible for you riven.
Before that she went to a class in Redland High School which should be accessible. It was ok and she had a good time there, although I can't remember the price (more expensive than the Old Vic though). It's Helen O'Grady Drama Academy (google it).

FrogPrincess · 24/11/2010 10:51

oops riven didn't realise you didn't want redland! They have classes in other areas of Bristol so might be possible to find a suitable one though.

We had flyer from stagecoach in DS's bookbag yesterday, they seem to have a Hanham/Kingswood branch if that's any good.

We had an ad in the school newsletter this week for Stand and Deliver Children's Drama School Christmas Holiday Programme held in Westbury on Trym Village Hall the week before Christmas. 10am-4pm is £32. Don't know anything else about it but the contact is [email protected] if it is an good to anyone?

My DD goes to BOV and loves it and gets a bursary so fees reduced. Cue bristol at Cotham open to all (I believe) from Y4 up. Here's the copy and paste from the cotham school website.
"This company is for children in Year 4 at primary school through to post-16 students. Our creative drama Company offers the opportunity for students from Bristol schools to work together in creative drama activities out of school hours. Sessions are suitable for complete beginners or those with experience. Please contact our administrator, for details of the simple application process. Our fees are £40 for each set of autumn, spring or summer sessions with some provision for concessions."
