Glasgow Gaelic School?

I got chatting to a fellow mum in the doctor's surgery today who has her daughter at the Gaelic School. She was very positive about it and her daughter seemed beautifully behaved. My dd is due to start P1 in August, school not yet decided. Would you recommend the Gaelic School for parents who only speak English? Is homework difficult to manage in a second language? Please let me know your experiences of the school, good or bad. Also is it true all kids are collected on a bus? Smile

kirmcc really sorry to hear it's not working out for your dd. Can I ask what has changed your mind? Did something unpleasant happen?

I live in this neck of the woods and I know that the Gaelic School is an option that crops up when starting your child off at schools looms and you don't live in the catchment area for one of the very few 'good' state schools about, and paying for private education isn't an option: you feel like you're cornered, and this is a way out!! Personally, I don't send my child to the school since we aren't gaelic speakers, but some people do go for this option, despite not speaking gaelic, although I don't know how it all pans out for them; I would imagine that if you remain sufficiently motivated to learn the language, it could work out fine for you. It all depends how desperate you are about the schools situation - sorry for being so frank, but it IS the elephant in the room let's face it! - and believe me, I sympathize with you! Good luck!

i wasn't desperate at all about the school situation, tbh, i just can't believe my luck that my kids will speak two languages fluently by the age of 12. however, i am comforted that should we move from the area where we live we won't have to move school as well.

My daughter is in P4. We stay in Townhead (city centre) and the teaching language in her current school is English. I would like get a place for her at Glasgow Gaelic School next year. Do you think it poosible? Please advise.

Had no idea there was a Gaelic school in Glasgow.
It's a real pity that it's not taught in schools generally, would love my kids to learn.

Unlikely to get a place in p5. She would need to have been in Gaelic medium education from pretty much p1, unless she speaks Gaelic in the home. She would not be able to be taught through Gaelic which is the dominant language at the school. All the kids there have been in Gaelic education since p1..

Guys - we have two fluent gaels and just moved down near glasgow. I went to the school yesterday -looks a bit compromised for facilities with just a small Astro pitch. We had resigned ourselves to an English language school but are now tempted. Any suggestions/ comments from anyone who has had kids through high school here?

MaybesAye · 11/08/2017 16:14

Have they come from another GME school? Facilities are ok. Not brilliant. They manage with sports through what they have, clever timetabling and good PE teachers as well as outside facilities like kelvinhall I think. Plans are afoot to improve as school roll in high school increases.

Ps maybe start another thread as this one is pretty dated!

daddy1973 · 11/08/2017 16:46

Yes- all schooling in GM until age 11. Fluent. A bit of a frosty functional reception from staff when enquiring. Thanks. Seems quite awkward to get to if you aren't inside the city limits? (We stayed rural)

Are your kids admitted already? Successful placing request made? Today was first day back for staff so it may be that they were getting back in the swing. Normally very lovely.
