I'm moving imminently to N16 from a village in rural France. I have two children of primary age, and have to get schools asap. I'm very confused (not to say horrified) by some of the things I've read about Hackney schools. DH going to the Learning Trust tomorrow to try to put application in but they were unhelpful and uninterested on the 'phone. My children have only been to a French village school, and I don't know what school would be best to try for, given their sheltered little country backgound. Any thoughts gratefuly received.

Don't worry, the schools in Hackney have improved greatly over recent few years. some are extremely good. The Learning Trust publishes a book with info about the local schools, and you can get a good impression, but you really have to visit the school to get an idea of what the school is actually like.

the best schools may be full because term has already started, the learning trust will be able to tell you where the vacancies are.
Remember you don't actually have to send them to school right away until you get places you like - You can home school if necessary. My friend just moved from wales with 2 DC's and it took a few months to get good school places in Stokey, and they didn't get into the same school, but it's worth hanging on for a decent school. ( they home schooled while waiting for places).

Thanks Lauree. Do you think it cuts your chances on the waiting list for a good school, if you take another place in the meantime? I would find it hard to home school as I work away from home a lot.

I have not idea about that, but I could ask my friend what they thought and repost in a few days.

It doesn't cut your chances, you can stay on the waiting list. my sense is that in the early years (ages 5-6) places are v hard to come by but later, easier. Depends very much where you are moving to too.

Hi,
What age are your children? There are often places for older children (year 3 plus) available. If you manage to secure a place at a good school that you're happy with for an older child, then the younger one will get priority on the waiting list because of the "sibling rule". There are really excellent schools in Hackney (in my part of Hackney I rate Jubilee, Betty Layward, and William Patten highly). It's very daunting and stressful but remember you only have to do this once and then they're set for several years. I wish you best of luck!
