"Glasgow schools 'lousy'" according to councillor

The front page headline of my local paper 'the Extra' has quoted East Renfrewshire councillor McCaskill as describing Glasgow schools as above in a meeting about the St Ninians catchment dispute.

Any thoughts?

Well done for sticking to your guns prettybird, it takes a bit of initiative to keep these things going.

Hindsight is a bugger isn't it? If DH wasn't so cackhanded with money we might have been able to afford to keep this flat and rent it out. It would be great as a student let because it's near Strathclyde and Caledonian and has 5 bedrooms. We used to have lodgers in our younger pre baby days (never repeating that!).

Unfortunately we are selling the flat to SIL, which is handy but still a slap in the face as I reckon she'll rent it out and we will have to sit and watch her easy income stream :(

MummyO3, sorry but I'm about to be really pedantic and arsey! Blush

'Aye' and 'naw' and 'maw' are not slang. They're Scots, which is recognised as a minority language by the European Commission.

Sorry to be irritating but it just makes me so sad that our language (which used to be the language of course, btw) is dying out because people regard it as a marker of a poor background and bad education. Sad

*of court. Not of course...

All three of mine will have a 'lousy' education in Glasgow.

Although so far it's been great.

Water finds it's level and I'm sure all of mine will do just fine at their local state secondary.

That councillor is confirming and reinforcing the prejudices of people at the meeting (and on here, it seems) to make political capital. It is not that 'the schools are lousy, but that Glasgow is contending with huge social problems with very little money.

Sorry but the comments on here have made 'me angry and I usually like the Glasgow threads.

Commander- obviously noone meant to cause offense intentionally but as you said (and I think it is fair to say) Glasgow does contend with social problems and no capital to throw at it.
As a resident I would love for this to improve but I cannot see great changes in the immediate future.

As was previously said, an education is only as good as the family who instil it. But it would be much better, and probably perfect, if all schools could support this ethos as well.

I think if you care about your child's education then they have a better chance of doing well. If you don't care then what hope have they got?

I went to a naff school and did quite well, and so have done not too badly for myself but unfortunately, this cannot be said for some of my old classmates who didn't have as supportive families. But I believe this is the case no matter where you go tbh.
