Spellings Intervention- Is it a joke for a 6 year old

My dd is one of the summer children in her class and at the beginning of YR1 was put on a Reading Recovery programme which is based on speeches and sound. She was on 2c level in Literacy, 2C writing and 1B in Numeracy.

However now that she is in Yr2 she has been picked up for what the school calls a Spelling Intervention Programme. The teacher explained that she was not a big fan of spellings but they had to do it. So my dd has to miss an assembly one day of the week to do this programme.

The first batch of spellings included play, say, pray, delay, tray etc which might daughter got all correct without looking.

I am quite frustrated at these interventions programmes. My dd being at only 6 years should be surely left I feel to develop accordingly rather than being assesed and intervening. She lost her love of reading when she began the programme and she stammered a lot at the beginning trying to break down words phonetically.

Should she have got the time to read with the TA everyday for the 20 minutes they used on the intervention programme my dd would have achieved far more better results than these programmes in terms of reading I think. Just reading with her would have done magic.

Its a shame and some parents mights say that they are fantastic but in my personal view these are not necessary at this stage.
