New feminist group in York

YorkFeministNetwork · 24/09/2010 16:53

Hi all, I am a regular who has namechanged for this.

We are setting up a York Feminist Network and as there are lots of feminists on MN I thought it was worth posting it here in case anyone is interested!

I might be interested in this - do you plan to have meetings/events?

YorkFeministNetwork · 24/09/2010 17:01

ooh that was quick Northernlurker!

We think we would like to have events but don't have any plans yet. What kind of thing would you like?

So far it is basically me and one other person, plus she has 14 other people signed up to a 'would like to meet other feminists' group; hopefully quite a few of those will join.

So the group is young.... and can reflect the interests of its members Smile

WEll personally - I'm a busy working mum and I would like the chance to use my brain in a different way - so discussions and lecture type meetings would be more my thing than say social events . I'm not averse to a bit of campaigning either and as I have three daughters it would be great to have things that I could take them to as they get older. Oldest is 12 - big enough to get interested I think Grin I would really like something to go to about the history of women in York - loads of stuff out there.

Pootles2010 · 24/09/2010 17:33

Not sure how many things i'd be able to attend (my 8 week old makes things a bit tricky) but will be watching!

Pootles2010 · 24/09/2010 17:36

Northern - you might find [http://www.cambridge.org/uk/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521033374 this] interesting - a book recommended by my lecturer at uni.

Pootles2010 · 24/09/2010 17:36

Sorry i have no idea what i did wrong there. Just google 'book prostitution york' and its first link.

jooseyfruit · 24/09/2010 17:37

watching thread.

realising that I have definate feminist tendencies after reading loads on MN.

would find sitting round talking about it a bit intimidating though I think. would probably do a lot of nodding and 'ummming'

would be up for a bit of campaigning also.

Northernlurker · 24/09/2010 17:41

That's why I think lectures are a good idea - less scary Grin

That book looks good - will see if the library have it.

YorkFeministNetwork · 24/09/2010 17:49

I know my fellow setter-upper would be up for a bit of discussion and the odd lecture!
I absolutely love the idea of something on the history of women in York.

Pootles that book looks amazing. Is the author based in York?

I am sure I can get hold of some speakers if there is a market for that kind of thing.

We are going to keep a watching brief for issues to campaign on; so far York is not on the Hooters hitlist as far as I know!

Pootles - I have an 11 month old baby plus 2 older ones so I am very conscious of the need to be child-friendly/mum-friendly in what we organise! My fellow organiser doesn't have children and I think it's rather nice that we have different circumstances as it will stop us being too focused on either one type of issue or the other.

yes you're right Northernlurker. I can nod sagely from the back of an auditorium.Grin

I am an obsessive turner-over of Daily Star/Sun in Jacksons. That's about as far as my feminist activist-ness goes.

Northernlurker · 24/09/2010 17:54

this is one of my former lecturers.

There's the centre for women's studies at the university as well.

YorkFeministNetwork · 24/09/2010 17:56

auditorium may be a bit ambitious to start off with but you are very welcome to nod sagely from a smallish room!

when I was a student the best discussions were always the ones in the pub after the lecture anyway; if we had a formal discussion group it might feel a bit like a seminar! (This is why the Mumsnet online feminism book club is so great - if you can't think of anything to say it doesn't matter because no-one knows you are there.)

yay @ the obsessive turning over of the Sun!
I am too scared to do it in our newsagents as if I got banned I would have nowhere to go to do photocopying.

YorkFeministNetwork · 24/09/2010 17:57

good point re women's studies centre - must let them know what we are doing.

I have no idea where the author's based, sorry! Might be an idea to drop someone at York St John a line - not sure who actually. Will have a quick look into it. but when i was there there were a couple of lecturers and plenty of students who i'm sure would be interested...

Pootles2010 · 24/09/2010 21:09

Judy Giles is a Professor at YSJ, she's brilliant, might be worth dropping her a line. I believe she's linked to centre for women's studies also. If you google her you can get an email ad for her at the college.

Hi. My name is Linda. I am commenting on this thread as there may be people viewing it who maybe interested in a brilliant product I?ve found for Babies/Toddlers!

Ever tried to push a pushchair in the snow? Or on a beach? Ever tried to pull a baby/toddler in an ordinary sledge!? They just fall out! The Baby Luge is perfect with it's seat and safety harness!

It's 71cm long and 36cm wide.

I tried to get one for my baby last year and they sold out everywhere. :-( So this year I've placed a bulk order with the manufacturer making it possible to sell these at £25 each. Please get in touch if you would like one....they're £50 on Ebay!! (Type Baby Luge into the Ebay search to see a picture)

MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS [email protected] ? please do not reply via this thread as it belongs to another topic. Please e-mail me directly.

Get in touch if you would like one! And please don't wait until it snows as I will have sold out by then!

If you know anyone else that may be interested then please pass on my details at any baby/toddler meetings/groups! Mum's will love it!!

Also if there are any events in your local area and you would like me to post some flyers to you to give to other mums then I'm happy to pop some in the post!

The sledges are free local delivery to the Hull/York Area. Elsewhere will be £5.99 postage and packing.

They make perfect Xmas pressies for other babies too as most mums don't even know this baby sledge exists!!

I look forward to hearing from you

Linda.

sethstarkaddersmum · 25/09/2010 20:12

I am really struggling to work out why a baby sledge is relevant to a feminist group, Cookie. Am I missing something here? Confused

Cookie1982 · 25/09/2010 20:19

Sorry if I offended you or anyone in the thread.

Just noticed a lot of mums chatting on ths thread and thought someone might be interested?

I will not comment any further and will start my own thread.

Apologies again. It was meant with the best intentions.

Cookie1982 · 25/09/2010 20:34

Any ideas on how to remove my own comments?

jooseyfruit · 26/09/2010 20:22

eh? what happened there then?

sethstarkaddersmum · 26/09/2010 20:38

she was trying to sell baby sledges on random MN Local threads Grin

bellavita · 26/09/2010 20:52

I reported all her posts on the local York ones - they were stickied in my active.

Cookie1982 · 27/09/2010 22:10

I'm sorry.....I reported myself straight away!

Didn't read the guidlines before posting...I'm new to all this!!

My fault....sorry ladies...!!

I'll leave you to your feminist group chats!!
