Which zoo to go in the Cambridgeshire or not far away?

My kids love animals watching on TV and wherever they see anything outside. I would love to go to a zoo or an animal park with different species. May be there is a park were there are swans, geese, ducks wandering around; somewhere on the river. Something interesting and safe.

We go to Shepreth Wildlife park - it's got the animals but also a fabulous playground. Word to the wise - do not take the DCs directly to the playground as you'll never get them away from it to go see the animals!

Linton zoo is also good. a little bit cheaper than Shepreth too!

on the other hand I'm not sure I can guarantee the 'safe' bit.........

Hamerton is the closest to me, I take DD there all the time and she has yet to drastically injure herself, despite her best efforts Grin It is quite small and fairly basic but great for younger children. Here is the website.

Not actually very close (more of a big day out) but Whipsnade is awesome.

flowerybeanbag · 07/09/2010 20:39

Hamerton is fantastic, and you get really close up to the animals. We've got some amazing close-ups of tigers from there, plus you can feed little goats.

Take your own lunch/snacks though, coffee shop leaves a lot to be desired.

It looks as Linton is the least expensive if your child is under two. Ours is going to be two soon (there is an older as well), so the best option is Hamerton. They all look similar at least on the website with all these exotic animals. Whipsnade Zoo looks great indeed but so expensive. What is next on the list? Fruitshootsandheaves zoo. Cannot find the prices. Must be free! Be prepared, we are comming tomorrow! Grin

agree about hammerton, I find linton a bit grotty and it annoys me that they have those silly rides what cost 50p all around so when you are trying to show the kids the tiger or some other animal they are nagging to go on the postman pat ride

MrsJohnDeere · 07/09/2010 22:07

Whipsnade (although Beds not Cambs).

Another vote for Shepreth here. :)

I'd avoid Linton TBH, recently went with DD on her nursery tip. There are next to no changing facilities, cafe is poor and not many animals to see. Plus, if it's been wet the few days before you go - like it had when we went, it's really muddy to wander around.

kiwibella · 10/09/2010 20:01

we went to Wimpole Farm in the summer and dd2 loved it. Similar to other comments about the playgrounds being more interesting than the animals Grin but the two main playgrounds were FAB!!!

hedgepig · 11/09/2010 22:55

We like Shepreth too, it is a good sized site for the little ones not too big. And they have creepy crawly world as an add on if you like bugs and beasties.
