Cherry Hinton and Marshall Airport - what do you think?

Hi everyone!
I am new to this website, but hope to make a lot of good acquaintances here.
My family is planning to arrive ro Cambridge in the end of August and stay here for 2 years. My husband and I have 3 kids, the youngest is 5 m.o.

When looking for a house to rent, I have read lots of very good reviews on Cherry Hinton area. But my biggest concern is the Marshall Airport, which is situated extremely close, on my opinion. Please, tell me what you think! How does/doesn't it affect your life? Noise, air and water pollution???

I would be most thankful for your replies!!!

Elena

We live a little way away from the airport and to be honest, it's not too bad. There are lots of highly irritating private planes about at weekends but not very many big ones - in fact it's quite exciting when a big one does go over! Cherry Hinton itself is a little way out of town, but the outskirts, cherry hinton road, Perne road etc are nice. Good luck! If you need any advice on schools, just post!

Hi Elena! We live near Cherry Hinton, and to be honest the planes don't bother us at all - it's hardly Heathrow Wink. I wouldn't let it put it you off.

Live in a village bordering the airport and have no problems at all. There are the odd hercules' that land for repairs and as coolma mentioned plenty of privately owned light aircraft but thats it.

Couple of weeks ago there were two US aircraft practicing for the Farnborough air show that were very loud but that has only happened once since we've lived nearby (22 years) The Red Arrows do sometimes use Marshalls as a base if they are displaying at Duxford - more exciting than irritating!

Cherry Hinton has most things you'd need, in the High Street there is a library, mini tesco, newsagents, chemist, dentist, bakers, doctors, hair dressers, bookies(!) etc. Bus links to Cambridge itself are also very good.

Two bookies!!

Oh yes! Green one and Ladbrookes! Plus a few pubs - Wednesday morning sorted then!

Many thanks to all of you for your wonderful replies!!! Sorry I didn't see them earlier, soooo busy lately with all those farewell parties, birthday parties, grandmom visiting, packing and everything... And going to the UK just in two days! It is lovely to hear how great you feel about Cherry Hinton! We will visit this area when looking for housing.

Thanks again!

Hi Coolma,
Do you know/have you heard anything about Colville nursery and primary schools? My kids are not really native English speakers... And spent lots of time in Sweden (two youngest were born here). So I am really hoping they will be able to cope with the programme...

Sorry am in Portugal so have only just seen this. All i will say is we were offered a place at Colville for our dd, and would have home educated/left the country if that was only only option....

mwchil · 30/08/2010 20:34

Hi Coolma,

Thanks for answering. I am sorry, my English is not very good. What did you mean by this saying???

Ok sorry! Basically, we would never send our child there!

mwchil · 31/08/2010 10:21

Wow, thanks. Then what do you think about Mayfield primary? Is it better than Girton Glebe or not? Also to consider that we come from non-English speaking country and have lived in Sweden for the last 3.5 years. But kids went to English speaking schools in Sweden. Thank you for helping!
