i've come to realise that the food isnt amazing but the kids are still too excited by the thought of baked beans!

Typical, we move the week after so it seems silly to stock up but I think I'll have to.

Baked beans are so handy to have in as are the shortbread fingers and atleast those salt and vinager sticks taste right (would rather they had real crisps not that puffy corn type though)!

canella · 28/06/2010 15:29

oh you cant let the opportunity to stock up pass you buy!! the last couple of times i've only bought maybe 6 tins of baked beans and they are gone so quickly but this time i'm buying a whole tray of them!! and lots of salt and vinegar crisps! cant wait!

Bit OT, but does anyone know if it´s possible to buy evaporated milk in Germany?

admylin · 01/07/2010 06:51

I think I've seen something similar to evaporated milk sold in small 100ml or maybe 150ml cartons. You'll find it near the coffee and tea sections usually. Think it's called Kondensmilch.

diddl · 01/07/2010 08:18

I bought that the other day & it was really sweet so I thought it was condensed milk rather than evaporated-I think they are both called "Kondensmilch" here

Maybe I´ve just forgotten what it tastes like!

Do you happen to know if "Glücksklee" is the same as "Carnation"-think it´s a similar tin?

Maybe I need to try that rather than looking for the cheapest

admylin · 01/07/2010 08:48

Try Baerenmarke - sometimes comes in a little bottle or tin.
You could try and get the real thing online from food from home, they deliver foodfromhome.de/cat.2.0.php

diddl · 01/07/2010 09:02

Well, I´m not desperate & just remember have rellies coming for Christmas!

So-problem solved!

But I´ll try what you´ve suggested in the meantime.

Thanks for the help & sorry for the thread hijack!

admylin · 01/07/2010 10:45

No hijak rally! Are you in Germany for long? Why don't you join us on the German thread?

diddl · 01/07/2010 13:42

Just tried the "Glücksklee" which seems to be it-sterilized whereas the others are heat treated-maybe that´s the difference?

Saw Bärenmarke in a tin-but with added sugar.

When I shook it, couldn´t hear anything!

Wonder if that´s more what I´m thinking of as sterilized cream?

That´s for another day!

FolornHope · 01/07/2010 13:42

what is on offer hten?

admylin · 01/07/2010 15:16

Dd picked the leaflet up today so we'll be able to get scampi in breadcrumbs, cod in batter, salt and vinager crisps, shortbread fingers, marmalade, baked beans and worcester sauce.

No cheddar this time, would have been nice to get it in a block to grate. We can get cheddar style cheese but pre-packed in slices.

wahwahwah · 01/07/2010 15:17

Oooh - so what's the top 10 items?

SkipHopJump · 01/07/2010 15:21

Do they often have British week at Lidl? I'm moving to Germany in September and this would make me so happy!

admylin · 01/07/2010 15:24

A couple of times a year I think.

diddl · 01/07/2010 15:42

admylin-don´t know where you are, but all the stuff you mention we can get at our nearby supermarket-except marmalade, I think.

I do find it possible to eat over here without really "hankering" after stuff from UK tbh.

admylin · 01/07/2010 18:58

What is the scampi called in the German supermarket diddl?

I'm the same really - I was back in the UK last year for a while and I missed the food over here. The only thing I need is marmite, I can live without the rest. You can get chivers marmalade in edeka too.

diddl · 01/07/2010 19:18

Fairly sure it´s called Scampi tbh!

Mmm-marmite, yes, that is something I do get a fancy for-and twiglets!

admylin · 01/07/2010 19:26

Really, will have to look again.

I'm always searching through the Gefriertruhe in the supermarket in search of something new or tasty or that will feed everyone with no moaning. They all eat scampi!

canella · 02/07/2010 10:41

I dont miss any of the things that are on offer at lidl in british week but its just a nice treat when it comes round again!! The kids miss baked beans tho so it'll be nice to stock up on them! I find the cheddar cheese from kaufland better than the one in lidl ( but think thats cause i've got simple taste in cheese)!! But if they had orange squash one time i'd be happy - i really miss it!!

Same here canella. I think the attractive thing about teh lidl Britsih week is that it's quite cheap too so the beans are worth stocking up on (for example) rather than the over 1 euro tins at Edeka.

LinzerTorte · 02/07/2010 22:31

I'm so envious of you all having a British week! We get Greek weeks, Spanish weeks, American weeks (so do get baked beans then, but can get them just as cheaply at other supermarkets anyway), Italian weeks, Mexican weeks... in fact, every country but Britain weeks.

I'm starting to get cravings for British food after reading this thread - think it's about time we had another trip to M&S in Bratislava.

diddl · 03/07/2010 15:25

I´m really not missing British food atm.

Too busy guzzling enjoying German strawberries.

I´ve had the shortbread & didn´t find them all that good tbh.

That said, they´re not that expensive so perhaps better than nothing?

Think I´ll get some farty baked beans in though-45cents is about half price!
