Moving to Vienna and preg...

Moving to Vienna with DH?s Job, we are thrilled. Newly preg now 13 weeks and feel it is a great place to start a family. We are due to arrive on the 23 July.

However, I was wishing would someone give me advice on the mother and child pass. From online reading I know you get the booklet for your ob/gyn, and it needs to be obtained before week 16 of pregnancy. Also it is a prerequisite for the childcare allowance.

Arriving on the 23 of July would make me 19 weeks. Therefore I have made arrangements to fly to Vienna for an appointment to see an Ob/gny on the 21st of June, this is before the 16 week make. (Flying from Syria as we are here with DH?s current contract)

However we will not have are Social Security Numbers yet.

Does anybody have any experience of arriving in Vienna pregnant after the 16 weeks of pregnancy and getting the Mother and Child Pass, and the Children?s Allowance

Thanks in Advance.

Niamh

Hi Niamh,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I live in Vienna, but don't have experience of arriving after 16 weeks of pregnancy, etc. As you say you were reading online, I presume you speak German, so have a look here:

www.help.gv.at/Content.Node/8/Seite.082200.html

where you will see the following information:

Fristen

So it looks as though there is sometimes the possibility to obtain the pass after 16 weeks (why not call the gyn you plan to go to in Vienna and ask?). As you are living in Styria now, can you not go the the gyn there and get it from them? I thought it was an Austria-wide document, but I may be wrong!

How long have you been living in Austria? I am sure you will love Vienna, it is a great place to live!!

:-)

Hi Marie,

Thanks for your reply + info.

No I don?t speak German; I do however have good translation software. I plan to learn very soon.

Yes, I have been seeing a doc here and have had two scans and all necessary tests. But I live now in Syria, Damascus, Middle East.

I?m sure it will work out I?m just a bit stressed and trying to get everything done for the move?

My main concern is that because I won?t have any insurance coverage for the first visit, on the 21st June, I will have difficulty with receiving the childcare allowance.

Can?t wait to be in Vienna,

Thanks again
Niamh

Ok... ... I read too quickly and read "Syria" as "Styria" (i.e. Styria, Austria) and did wonder about the flying bit . Now I get it...doh!

Some of the pages of the "magwien" site are in English, so it is worth looking:
www.wien.gv.at/english/
If there is no English site available, it reverts to the German.

I don't know about the child allowance rules, as I don't claim it from the Austrian Government. There is some info in English on social security here:

www.wien.gv.at/english/health-socialservices/

and some in German here on the children's allowance:

www.help.gv.at/8/Seite.080600.html

Will this be your first child? Do you have a gyn here? I am sure someone will point you to:

www.viennababiesclub.com/

I never used it myself, as I was already long in Vienna when I was pregnant, but I hear really good things about the vbc. My gyn doesn't speak English, but I am sure you can get some recommendations on that site, if you don't yet have someone.

If you have any questions, just ask (and I will try to answer for the correct country ).

Hi

Ya ill have a look around, these sites

Not to worry about the misunderstanding, Paul (the other half) is working here (Damascus) for Siemens Austria and most of the staff are either Austrian or German. Some of which are from Styria, when they told me where they were from, I got very confused (thinking they said syria)? Easy mistake I geuss.

Yes I have an ob arranged in Vienna, Reginen Ahner, I got her contact detail from the VBC, Its is indeed a great site, and I will more than likely join the group, espicaly since I plan not to work for the first year of the childs life.

Yes this is my first and so excited, how mnay children do you have?

Again thanks for the info.

Niamh

Contact the Vienna Babies Club, it's a fantastic set up run by volunteer expat Mums for expat Mums IYSWIM. Many people find it a real life saver, I know I did. Very jealous of you going to Vienna .

OP, I really don´t think you have anything to worry about re the Mütter Kind Pass. If you´re not in the country pre 16 weeks then you can´t get it !! ; )

The principle of the Pass is to ensure that pregnant women and gynos ensure the minimum care to ensure a healthy pregnancy and child. So if you can just provide the details of the examinations/scans given by your current gyno (and the standards are at least equal to those in Austria!) then you will have nothing to worry about.. So I would concentrate on checking out what is normal in Austria.. The VBC will come in helpful here I´m sure! I´ve forgotten it all now!

What IS very important is your choice of gyno. Will you have "extra" insurance that covers a private maternity hospital? If so, you need to sign up with a gyno affiliated with that hospital. This might be something to check with your husband. What is his company´s standard medical insurance?

For me, having a baby in Vienna was great - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!! Good luck with the pregnancy!

DebInAustria · 18/06/2010 22:14

Hi, also with the Mutter kind pass make sure you go to every appointment as this does affect your child benefit and give in the correct paperwork at the correct time. I'm not in Vienna but I have had a baby in Austria so if you need any help just ask.

LinzerTorte · 19/06/2010 05:48

Hi Niamh,

We didn't move to Austria until DD1 was 18 months so couldn't get a Mutter-Kind-Pass for her. We didn't have any problems getting child benefit, although I can't remember exactly what we needed to do now - I think we just wrote a letter to the Krankenkasse to say that DD1 had all the check-ups in the USA so we were "let off".

I would second the advice about contacting the Vienna Babies Club - they really are a great source of information and a good way of getting to meet people.

Both DD2 and DS were born here (we're just outside Vienna) - it's a great place to have and bring up children! Just ask if you have any more questions.

DebInAustria · 19/06/2010 08:45

You might also be able to get Kinderbetreungsgeld(sp?) if you're planning to be at home with your child for 12 months which is extra to child benefit.

Hi NaimhMu, hi girls,
I'm new here but I have the very similar situation to what is descibed in the first post. We're going to relocate to Vienna in September and I'm not going to be there in time for the first scheduled in Mutter-Kind-Pass appointment.

NaimhMu, I'd really appreciate if you could share what did you end up doing. Did you take documents from Syria with you? were there any problems with submitting it to Krankenkasse and getting child care allowance?

I just need to know what to do before relocation.

Thank you very much in advance.
