Baby rice in France?

Hi,
Don't really know whether to put this question here or under Weaning, but here goes:
I live in France and am looking for baby rice. Not had any luck - anyone know what it's called? I've found all sorts of "céreales" that you mix in their bottles, but is that the same thing? I'm looking for something to thicken purées, not to put in a bottle (as DS refuses them...)

Thanks for your help!

Hi bunny i'm in exactly the same boat. Am just starting weaning and ds loves UK creamy porridge but i've run out. Everything in the supermarkets seems to be for bottles i did see something in the "pharmacie" which had instructions for bottles and spoon feeding. I was in a bit of a rush so i think it was made by picot?

Anyway i'm counting on my mum bringing out several packets at easter! Abit odd but french babies apparently don't eat baby rice??

shonaspurtle · 25/03/2010 19:15

Do they sell ground rice as a cooking ingredient? Because as far as I know, that's all baby rice is.

[Disclaimer: I've no idea what you would use ground rice for]

bunnyfrance · 25/03/2010 19:44

shona I'd be very surprised to find ground rice here - they're not really a rice eating lot!
maman that's a good idea, I'll have to import it via a willing contact in the UK. I feel as though I'm floundering around in the dark as far as weaning's concerned - no-one seems to know about BF babies over 6 months and how to introduce them to solids!

What do French babies eat?

Othersideofthechannel · 25/03/2010 19:50

I have two French babies.
The baby cereal you mix in bottles is often wheat flour based.
You can get a pure rice powder or flakes from pharmacies.
I thickened my purées with potato.

Othersideofthechannel · 25/03/2010 19:54

You can buy Quaker oats. I grind them in the food processor when recipes call for oatmeal, so presumably that would do for baby porridge.

I found baby rice in the local organic shop (a German brand). I didn't want to use the cereals as we wanted to delay introducing wheat because our older son has allergies, plus I think a lot of them had milk in, which we also wanted to avoid at that stage.

bluecardi · 26/03/2010 11:23

You can get rice flakes in a box with a bluebear on - think it's nestle. Often used to thicken up the purees. Check in the babymilk powder section of the supermarket.

castille · 26/03/2010 11:34

French babies and toddlers have sweetened ground cereals in bottles for breakfast.

When weaning they start with pureed veg, usually jars, there is no baby rice stage.

www.nestle-baby.ca/fr/products/cereal/starter/Rice_add_milk.htm could be interesting

bunnyfrance · 26/03/2010 19:49

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I'll go past a pharmacie and see what I can find.

I would just go for mashed potato if I were you. Baby rice isn't compulsory!

slim22 · 27/03/2010 16:16

nestle link, you brave lady!

As far as i remember cereals usually always wheat based in France. And yes, with added sugar !!!!!

Why not just cook a runny rice porridge and blitz it? ( what we do in asia). As time passes add pumpkin, carrots, pears etc etc....and stop blitzing to add texture.

bunnyfrance · 28/03/2010 19:38

Yes, wheat based and with various flavours like brioche, pain au chocolat...I kid you not

I'll try just adding rice in the blender and see what happens!

Try your local "bio-co-op" there are a few suitable products in our local one - brand names escape me as my "french" DS2 is 19 months now, but if you're still struggling I'll have a look next time I'm in there for you!

peasandbeans · 02/04/2010 19:52

In most organic shops you can buy something called 'crème de riz' which is the same thing as baby rice.

if you are just weaning I would advise against oats as they are full of gluten (much more so than wheat products).
