The Skilled Occupation List?

My husband and I have thought for a long time that it would be great to start somewhere new we have always liked the idea of Australia (probably because you hear more about it).
We have no close family and no ties in the UK so we have no worries about missing them.

Its something we have thought about for a long time but just put to the back of ours minds as one of those things that will never happen but the last few days we just had a quick browse around and came across this skilled occupation list. My husband is in IT and has about 5 or 6 years experience in his role BUT he doesnt have a degree. He currently run local government website and is a network administrator. These jobs are on this list BUT I am thinking that maybe he wouldnt qualify because of his lack of formal training?

does anyone know how this works or where i can find more info abotu this?

sorry if this is a stupid question I only just browsed around and came across it and it sparked an interest!

We looked into this at one point as DH is in IT but with no degree. I'm sorry I don't have time to find any links now but there are options in this situation, although 5-6 years may not be enough experience yet. Does he have any certifications like MCSE? That can count as a diploma level qualification.

There is something called Recognition of Prior Learning which people with quite a few years of experience (7-8??) can do to be assessed by the Australian Computer Society, if you search the Britishexpats forum for 'RPL' you'll probably find some good information.

Will come back later and find some links for you if no one else has responded by then.

As Jenny has said, britishexpats will have a lot of more specific advice. I do know that the RPL route isn't easy and takes time, but you are right that without a degree it will be the only way to go with the ACS. If all his experience is in local government it will be easier than if he has had lots of different jobs as it can be difficult to get ex-employers to be as specific as they have to be in their references.

I just had a quick search for you and apparantly the ACS has just chanced it's RPL procedure. It might be worth having a word with a migration agent (make sure you talk to one specialising in IT) to get an idea of your chances.
