Language schools in Geneva?

Hi.

Moving to Geneva (Carouge, most likely) next year and my Franglais is far from intelligible.

Does anyone know of any courses/schools I could possibly attend once I've arrived?

Many, many thanks in advance for any responses!

Hi Wuxiapian,

I had lessons through Supercomm, and was happy with them. DH's company paid for private lessons and they were well worth the money.

If your DC are going to local schools, then you will get French lessons from the city of Geneva. They are group lessons so you obviously do not learn as fast as with individual lessons but they are free.

The other place for cheap lessons is Migros Ecole. I have not tried them out though, so cannot say what they are like.

Have you set a moving date yet?

Hello, MmeLindt, and thank you for taking the time to reply.

Well, the schooling issue's not yet been sorted for definite. Hoping to get my (11 yr old, ASD) son into the International School - this would qualify me for the lessons?

Making note of Supercomm and Migros Ecole.

Will be making the move July latest - possibly Apr/May break.

Did you start as a beginner, and, are you fluent now?

Thanks again.

I am not sure if you would get the lessons. As far as I know it is only for parents with DC at local schools.

I was an absolute beginner when I arrived and now understand lots, can make myself understood (most of the time) but am still far from fluent.

Private lessons are very expensive but progress is obviously much faster than group lessons. Or you could look for private group lessons that offer smaller number of participants.

Obviously if you have a group of 20 participants, by the time everyone has said, 'Je suis MmeLindt', and had their pronounciation corrected then half of the lesson is gone.

Hi Wuxiapian, my knowledge is rather out of date however I attended evening classes at Migros, then went to daily morning classes for 2 months. By the end I was reasonably able to get by - or at least understand loads. Migros is a supermarket chain and this is just an add on for them. I found them to be pretty good and the location would be convenient for you in Carouges. Most of the students were from non-English speaking countries which was actually a good thing as french was the common language.
Good luck!
