Here we go again girls, would appreciate any advice on this. Dh has been offered a great job in Auh, with full expat package. Co have said that housing now far cheaper in dxb, so advise us to live there and put kids to school there and he commute each day. Any thoughts on that advice?

secondly , we have 2 children , girl in year 10 and boy in year 4, any good English schools i should contact? or any to avoid?

TBH we are not sure whether to leave uk or not but dh flying out to have big chat with employer on Thurs this week. Really appreciate any thoughts.

thanks all for your valuable info, very helpful, except of course Msdoctor who clearly is talking out of her arse and has too much time on her hands.

I have spent a lot of time in many areas of the Gulf, so am not quite the ignorant fool you perceive me to be Msdoctor.

Not sure Nodders, will get package confirmed then make decision, course ds will always be the problem

MsDoctor · 29/12/2009 16:31

a truly wonderful place

NancyDrewRocks · 29/12/2009 16:42

MsDoctor the Marnie Pearce case is an affront to all right thinking individuals. I am certainly not going to argue that it is acceptable for a woman to be imprisoned for adultery but you seem exceptionally aggressive in your hatred of the UAE and I am finding that a strange coming from a person who has not been there, so I'm wondering why?

You don't seem to want to enter into a discussion, rather you post links to "worst case scenarios".

How about I just post links on Fran Lyon/shelter/any random newspaper page with the stabbing of a teenage boy reported?

MsDoctor · 29/12/2009 16:59

I didn't realise stabbing a teenage boy was actually legal.

mimsum · 29/12/2009 18:06

Good grief msdoctor, what is your problem?

Anyhow, words/MABS the reason we didn't all move out was we didn't know how long this was going to go on for (initially supposed to be 6 month project). If we'd known at the start maybe we would have made a different decision

ds1 had just started at secondary and ds2 was just starting to blossom at his primary after a difficult couple of years and as both boys have statements getting the right placement is far from straightforward

Plus my dad, mum and sister have all been seriously ill in the last couple of years and I'm glad I was here for them

Hey it could be worse!

NancyDrewRocks · 29/12/2009 18:35

Msdoctor you're really quite tiresome aren't you, which is aggravated by your total inability to discuss. Yawn.

MABS · 29/12/2009 21:29

Msdoctor seems to be able to cut/paste and do links very well tho!! s'pose everyone is good at something....

Totally understand Mimsmum, do you ever get out there at all?

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 29/12/2009 21:42

MsDoctor if one were to peruse any UK red top you'd never come here either

uk is flawed and has issues too.good and bad
UAE has good and bad points too

it comes down to balanced weigh up of finances, circumstances, lifestyle.i wish MABS and her family all the best with her choices

MABS · 30/12/2009 09:32

thanks scottishmummy

Yes MABS we've managed to get out about once a year - going out at Easter - the kids love it and dd(7) would move out like a shot if it were her decision

I have to confess I do feel very ambivalent about dh working there but it's a lot preferable to him being unemployed here (he got made redundant and this was the only thing he got offered ...)

MABS · 30/12/2009 14:31

i can totally understand Mimsmum, our 'problem' if that makes sense, is that dh has a great job here, and would have to leave it, so it's a really big decision. Your dh not in airline industry by chance is he?

OP posts:
mimsum · 30/12/2009 22:24

not airline - media

good luck with your decision

MABS · 31/12/2009 09:24

thanks mimsum x

Having happily been fortunate enough to meet the OP on several occasions I can vouch for the fact that she is not an ignorant fool and is very happily married and therefore unlikely to become an adulteress. Hopefully this will reassure the likes of Msdoctor that the OP will not have an adulterous relationship and be parted from her children and thrown in a jail to rot.

I, (clearly unlike msdoctor) have travelled to many Middle Eastern countries and out of all of them, including the one I live in, Dubai is probably one of my favourite. I am back in the UK for a few weeks leave and shock, horror, in my local town someone was beaten and stabbed

msdoctor if you think Dubai is that terrible, you should try visiting KSA

MABS, I'm so glad I chose THAT school for my DS as I read in the news a few weeks ago that our second choice school suspended some sixth formers for possessing drugs! Just think, if they did that in the ME they'd be stoned

MABS · 01/01/2010 14:04

Thanks MOS, wee still need more info on the package to make an informed decision. ( see you at that lovely school soon i hope x)

words on a screen, (and someone else, sorry got distracted by the shite from whatever her name was)

Please dont worry about the tests and def not about the shiny new websites. Tests for all schools except Dubai College (senior school only) are generally to make sure your kids can do whatever is expected of them by the national curriculum. Honestly dont worry, and shiny websites do not make a school. Generally they are checking for a reasonable standard of English language, otherwise it holds the classes back and the school will get downgraded in the yearly KHDA inspections.

JPS and Wellington International are both owned by GEMS and thats another story, but Ds went to JPS and had a good time and a good education. They also have an excellent and one of the only reputable SFL depts in DXB. Likewise Wellington also have an excellent SFL section.

Places are still hard to come by and you should be contacting the schools asap. We start back on Sunday 3rd and most others schools will. Kings is excellent but not so hot on the sporting side however they are making improvements, JAPS is also a great school. dont bother with looking for a place at either JESS location unless its for more than year 7 as they are way oversubscribed, and a bit English IMHO.

Dubai College is considered to be the best senior school in Dubai. They didnt get an outstanding in their report which surprised everyone, except those in the know who realised the KHDA dont like DC. Very jealous Ds didnt get a place . However they have something like 2000 applications for the 150 places, so I try to tell myself not to take it personally.

Something to be aware of, I dont know the age of your kid/s but generally companies dont pay nursery fees and they are the same cost as schools! ie very expensive. Also you dont really get a choice about if they go to school nursery or not. If you dont then places are much ahrder to come by the higher you go up the school. I am not fully informed on this as DS is way beyond that but its what I hear from friends.

Personally I quite like Dubai, yes it is vulgar but so are many places in the UK and at tleasts its clean. Apart from that we have had some great sport and concerts this last year. Brilliant museums and collections in AD, yes I know its not DXB but it is next door, less time for me than travelling to london from where I lived before. IMHO life is what you make it and sunshine helps.

Regarding Marnie Pearce there is a lot more to that case than was reported. An injunction was served so freedom of press was not allowed, and yes I realise that gives grist to whatever her name was but really does every paper in every country tell the truth? regarding ehr friend with the weed, tough shite, good move in my opinion, the rules are laid out on the table NO DRUGS, typical she thinks her friend should be above the law.

MABS · 02/01/2010 14:39

Thanks Starmuumy, thinga re slightly differentb now as ,if we move, we will live and work in auh. Any ideas of schools there? dd is nearly 15 and ds is 9 years

OP posts:
mumoverseas · 02/01/2010 18:15

how typical MABS, just when you are thinking of moving out to that neck of the woods it looks like I'm moving back! x

MABS · 02/01/2010 19:33

is it definite mos? has he gone back?

OP posts:
mumoverseas · 02/01/2010 20:26

don't know where he is MABS. Not heard from him at all. I know he has our flight tickets and his passport. Not sure if he has/is going back earlier. We were all due to fly back next Friday. A bit in limbo at the moment as I can't go back there without his permission. Can't believe he hasn't even phoned or texted to see how the DC are

MABS · 02/01/2010 21:07

am soooo sorry, truly shocking . anyone you couls contact in Saudi who could say if he there? xx

OP posts:
mumoverseas · 03/01/2010 11:20

Hey MABS, he is there. Spoke to a friend last night who put it in my mind he might have gone back. I was up all night (DD was crying until 3am for daddy) and so tried phoning then (6am in KSA) and he answered the phone at the house. He literally left here am NYD and flew back overnight that night. Arse

MABS · 03/01/2010 18:42

OP posts:
mumoverseas · 04/01/2010 11:33
