UK appliances in the US - anyone have advice please?

We are moving to Boston in January and I am not sure what to do about some of my kitchen stuff - mainly my breadmaker and food processor, both of which I use a lot. I know that they won't work in the US because of the different voltages but I was planning to buy a transformer that would convert the voltage so I would still be able to use them. However, an American friend has advised me not to do that because she says that they won't work properly even with a transformer and that they will be likely to break down.

I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this. Would I be better to just leave them in storage and buy new ones in the US?

All advice gratefully received!

Thanks Riven. There's no substitute for first hand experience!

The voltage is pretty easy to deal with. You just use a properly sized transformer.

The problem is with the cycle frequency, which affects anything with a motor, ie your food processor.

Your FP will turn 20% faster in the US, and that will wear it out pretty quickly.

It depends really on how much you use it, and whether you are returning to the UK. If you are leaving for good, then by all means take it with you, especially if you are not paying the shipping yourself. If your move is temporary, then storage might be an idea.
