Durch die Strassen auf und nieder
leuchten die Laternen wieder:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Wie die Blumen in dem Garten
blühn Laternen aller Arten:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Und wir gehen lange Strecken
mit Laternen an den Stecken
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

It is that time of the year again. Check your lanterns, get enough batteries, start the Bastelaktion.

no chance of leaving the judo kit and guitar at Hort Monday (whenever they open), save the going back and forth a bit?

ErnestTheBavarian · 21/09/2009 11:57

I don't trust him with a mouldy apple core, let alone ££££££ of judo kit and guitar. It's only him who's going abck and forth so I'll let him suffer That part is just making sure he actually does it

Just got an sms from ds1 drum teacher asking to reschedule the lessons. arrggghhh. I've only just been into the hort to rearrange all thier times for the next 2 months. They're going to love me

ZZZenAgain · 21/09/2009 12:05

ha ha ha bl* rescheduling. I know. You finally get the whole sheboodle organised and someone says, oh we'll be having the pottery at 5 on Friday this term instead of at 4.

No, no! You will NOT change it now, it buggers all my plans... Ten we don't get to swimming on time and if we can't do the swimming till later, we can't get to wherever etc.

drums?! You are brave. Dd is always clamouring to learn the drums but I have turned a deaf ear to it. I will not be moved. Violin is enough thanks, next instrument (if any) is going to be some easy thing and no way is it going to be drums. I can understand the attraction though, bet your boy loves them. Does he learn in a group?

ErnestTheBavarian · 21/09/2009 13:36

He pestered us for ages, now he moans every time he has to practice. Kids He has 1-2-1 lesson, maybe when he gets better he can join a group and enjoy it more. We have the drums in the playroom in the Keller, so the noise isn't any bother at all. As long as he shuts the door that is.

Luckily, the re scheduled class fits in with our timetable by some utter miracle, but I will have to change our times with the Hort for the 3rd time this year, ie in less than a week

nighbynight · 21/09/2009 16:14

lol ernest, bet you arent the only one. I havent fixed our schedules yet.

I too have days of being positively bilingual, and days when people kindly help me out because they think I dont speak german. Incredible insight into how my brain can work differently on different days.

ZZZenAgain · 22/09/2009 19:53

it depends what language you've been speaking all day, doesn't it? Tagesform I suppose.

Ernest, I think the Hort is used to it and probably every new school year they get this. Your Hort sounds good, they seem to organise a lot of interesting activities. I like the sound of the woodwork for instance. Dd is signed up for wood carving which I think sounds great. I also like the fact it is run by a woman. She did a holiday course sculpting with wood bits and pieces last year which I also found good. I would like her to do normal woodwork, working with saws and drills and sandpaper and so on. I have also found a nice place where she can do it even but naturally cannot fit it into our busy schedule.

What can you do? I like the sound of your laid-back life though ML, I really do. Maybe your school covers a lot of this stuff anyway and then with an extra language to learn your dc probably have enough on their plates. Do they have Wednesday off like the French schools do?

MmeLindt · 23/09/2009 08:16

Yes, we are off today, ZZzen. From next year we will only have Wednesday afternoons off as they are not covering enough school hours apparently.

DS would have stayed home today anyway, he had a bit of a temperature. Not sure why. He did have a wee accident on Monday, really hurt his finger. Not sure if it is infected. He seems a bit better now, he was complaining wehn he got up "Ich habe Schmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerzen"

Good morning. Lovely and sunny. Dd finally seems to be sleeping through, thank God - 3 nights in a row! Converted her cot to a bed on Saturday, and she stood up all by herself for the 1st time too, to thunderous applause from her brothers Now they just have to say 'standy uppy' Adely, and she rises clumsily to her feet, giving herself a round of applause at the same time. It's very cute.

Oktoberfest madness will descend this weekend, as we have 2 lts of guests, and I even have an invite to a tent, no dh, no kids. I can pretend, for a few sweet hours to be a normal person, an individual. woo hoo.

How much would you guys push to make your dc stick with something? Ds2 started judo just a couple of weeks before summer break and he really loved it. Now he says he doesn't want to do it, and has wept when I tried to send him (mind you he does cry easily) In fact, the 1st time he totally lied to me and said they were on a field trip which i was a bit about. Now he admits he lied and says he doesn't want to do it.

I'm not sure what to do. He did really enjoy the few times he went, and I think doing judo would be good for him, a. to do a sport he can keep up long term, but also it's supposed to be especially good for ADHD. OTOH, I can understand, after school, homeowrk, Hort, he just can't be bothered, or would rather just stay at home. He has guitar lessons, which is not up for discussion, not for a long time anyway, he won't be allowed to drop them, so do I let him ditch the judo? I am disappoonted about it tbh

MmeLindt · 23/09/2009 08:59

Morning Ernest. Well done to your DD, that made me smile, the image of her brothers applauding.

I made DD go back to the horseriding and get on the horse but did not force it as I could see that she was genuinely terrified. That was as a result of a fall though, not because she has changed her mind.

DS had to go to horseriding last year even though he said halfway through the year that he was not going back.

Have you spent money on Judo kit?

OP posts:
hupa · 23/09/2009 09:22

Ernest - your dd sounds so sweet.
I´m not sure what I´d do about the judo to be honest. Has he not been at all after the holidays? I think I´d ask him to give it one more go because he enjoyed it so much before, but let him stop if he he´s still not keen after going back. Maybe he´s just a bit unsure after the long break and just needs to get going again to realise he enjoys it- a bit like me and exercise to be honest.

MmeLindt - hope ds is feeling better. I have to say your use of wee threw me for a minute. I wondered how he could have hurt his finger while wetting himself, then remembered you`re Scottish and it all made sense .

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 12:43

I would try to go to the judo and observe it. Maybe there is some nastiness there you have not been told about. Rather than force him to perservere if he is being treated roughly or something like that, I would like to form my own impression.

If you see him happy enough and managing ok and you have spent money on the kit, I might say he needs to give it a year. If he is being laughed at and made fun of because he can't do it well for instance and you force him to continue, that wouldn't be great at that age IYSWIM

Aw how sweet your dd sounds, applauding herself. I can really imagine it.

ErnestTheBavarian · 23/09/2009 12:50

ok. Just got call from Hort. ds1 & 2 have apparently got head lice. Shite.
I am so embarrassed. Been told they can't return without doctors note. Has anyone had it? Tbh last week I found a couple so I got some head lice shampoo stuff and blasted everyone with it and I've combed and combed and combed, everyday. SO I don't know what else to do. I have combed them all with a lice comb and hot washed all their clothes and bedding. What else can I do and how long do I expect them to be off???

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 13:27

depends onthe shampoo you used, sometimes you have to do it twice. There is something which is supposed to be particularly effective butas usual I can't remember the name. The pharmacist will know, it's the one that you do not need to redo.

There's no need to be embarrassed. They got it FROM someone and there is no way of preventing them just walking across from head to head. Dd had it at kiga once.

Hmm well you have to tackle brushes and combs, any hats they might have worn, jackets/hoods. There's the bedding. Then think where their heads may have been resting. Cushions( cuddly toys that cannot be washed you put in plastic bags and stick them in the freezer for a couple of days and that kills them all off. Vacumn, in particular after combing. I think there is just someone in the hort or at school who has reinfected them. They are on top of it in DL generally though, none of this repetitive plague-like infestation you keep hearing about on MN.

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 13:31

Is Canella around?

Canella, I was wondering if your MIL would have a good recipe for Zwiebelblootz?

MmeLindt · 23/09/2009 15:31

Oh, lice. I hate them. We had them twice last year, I think it was the pony riding.

I used Nydal but it was pretty awful, as you have to leave it on 8 hours so they do look terrible. When we moved to CH we were given a different solution, it is a shampoo that is washed off after a couple of minutes. Was very effective.

Don't forget to do your hair as well, and your DH's. I had them last year.

OP posts:
ErnestTheBavarian · 23/09/2009 16:35

seriously, I have done all our hair, changed and hot washed all the bedding, special shampooed hair and combed a hundred times. There are still a few nits in their hair which I just cannot get rid of depite hundreds of combings. I can see them never being allowed to attend school again. How tf do you get rid of the nits. The lice were a doddle. The nits have defeated me

nighbynight · 23/09/2009 17:20

Order Nitty Gritty combs over the internet, otherwise they'll be off for weeks.

Horrid little things are in our town, too.

ErnestTheBavarian · 23/09/2009 17:29

thanks for tip nn - site suggestion?

hupa · 23/09/2009 17:34

You can order it from amazon here. It seems quite reasonable and the postage isn´t too bad.

ErnestTheBavarian · 23/09/2009 18:23

uk postage only £2. postage to de is £8! The comb itself is only £6! Gawd. does seem to have great reviews - you really rate it nn? Fil is coming on Saturday, will see if i can find somewhere he can buy it for me and bring it. thanks

hupa · 23/09/2009 18:24

Oops, sorry, didn´t read it carefully enough.

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 20:33

they sell nit combs in Germany too. With the nits, I pulled them off one by one using my nails and then dipping my hand into a bowl of water and tackling the next. They are attached to the shaft of hair about 2 cms from the scalp so they don't come off when you shampoo. They may die though. The nit comb breaks the legs of adult or growing lice but will not pull off the nits. They sort of glue them onto the hair as they go. You need to (or I did) grap a nit between the nails of your index finger and thumb and slide it along the hair shaft to the end.

With your boys tbh I'd be tempted to cut their hair very very short if the trouble persists.

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 20:34

graB
not grap

ErnestTheBavarian · 23/09/2009 21:11

I have a metal nit comb but it doesn't remove the nits. tbh, I can hardly see them, ds2 hair just looks glossy and shiney to me - I said as much to him & he said they were looking at him through a magnifying glass! Bloody hell.

Ds 1 & 3 have got very fine hair so the nit comb just slides over it, hair, nit and all. Ds 2 & 3 happy to have hair cut. ds1 very very against. loads of boys in his class have got this awful shaggy too long hair, so I guess he just wants to look absolutely awful too

Ds1 was also saying that they were slagging me off for changing my times, so am a bit fed up with them at the moment, though not allowing them due to nits is fair enough, I understand them's the rules and all that.

ZZZenAgain · 23/09/2009 21:33

they'll slag everyone off over the year, don't worry.

Nits are a right pain but at least when they're checking thoroughly and refusing to admit dc who haven't gotthe medical all-clear, you know it won't go on and on all winter with 1 dc re-infecting the lot etc.
