Durch die Strassen auf und nieder
leuchten die Laternen wieder:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Wie die Blumen in dem Garten
blühn Laternen aller Arten:
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

Und wir gehen lange Strecken
mit Laternen an den Stecken
rote, gelbe, grüne, blaue,
Lieber Martin, komm und schaue!

It is that time of the year again. Check your lanterns, get enough batteries, start the Bastelaktion.

LOL

I write so many of them, it's an utter disgrace. You just had me floored with scince because I was still thinking schools etc and couldn't make the leap to a new subject , I was just thinking what the heck kind of insitution is this then?

admylin · 20/11/2009 10:49

Did anyone watch all the flooding in UK on TV? It looks really bad, especially up in the North-West, my home town was totally cut off from everything and they were rescueing people by helicopter in the neighbouring town.

Just remembered Ernest was holidaying in the north for 2 weeks wasn't she? Hope she stayed dry.

Frosch · 20/11/2009 11:55

Sorry ZZZen, I'm losing the plot; I thought it was you who had the eight-month old. Is it Ernest then? Brain like a sieve. Am soooo tired and have just drunk one of those Red Bull thingies and will be very disappointed if it doesn't 'work'!

The weather back home is awful, especially in Cumbria. I have family in Barrow but I think they're not affected. Have just seen that a policeman has been swept away, which is unbelievable. How much water does that?!

hupa · 20/11/2009 14:00

Frosch - I have to say that my ds was/is much more laid back than dd. She sounds just like your dd at that age - I remember the screaming when she was on her tummy only too well. Luckily for me she was my first, so ds was a really pleasant surprise - I think he spent the first 4 months just sleeping. I don´t envy you at all having the laid back one first - it must have been a real shock to the system.

Zzzen - I think unless I lived in a detatched house with a sound proofed cellar or attic there would be no way I would let either of my two anywhere near a drum kit. You very brave even considering it.

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2009 18:28

I am only coming round to it now hupa because I have read they don't need a drum kit at home, all they need for practicing is drumsticks according to the wisdom of MN so I can live with that. I couldn't have a drumkit in the house, not even in the cellar.

I will have a look for a teacher and quiz the teacher thoroughly on all that first though. Drum kits are just too inconvenient if you move around a bit, just like pianos

ZZZenAgain · 24/11/2009 10:08

am getting a bit panicky about this swine flu. Everyone seems to be coming down with it and a friend of dd's is very ill indeed, really struggling to breathe although she was not asthmatic or anything before. Have made an appointment to get myself and dd vaccinated tomorrow but still feel uneasy about it.

It's a real toughie, isn't it? Don't like the sound of the vaccines and on the other hand don't like the sound of the illness itself.

Wish I knew what to do really but have more or less decided to go and get it over with tomorrow.

Frosch · 24/11/2009 11:38

Don't freak out ZZZen, otherwise you'll make yourself ill! DS's school had 50+ cases in one week but he's managed to escape. We've been religiously washing hands and smothering them in antibacterial gel and, aside from his fever a couple of weeks ago, nothing. The kids in his class who were confirmed with H1-thingy are all fine, it was just like having a bad cold.

ZZZenAgain · 24/11/2009 11:59

LOL at making myself ill from freaking out about it. I suppose you are right. I am freaking out about it though. Everywhere we go regularly about half the people we usually see/meet are lying low with swine flu (supposedly)

Good to hear the dc are coping well at your ds' school. I was swayed towards vaccination by reading about that Italian girl who died in hospital in Austria aged I think 11.

admylin · 25/11/2009 09:23

No swine flu vaccinations in our house, we're on high dose vitamin C and vitamin D though. Dh was meant to go for one but he isn't in contact with patients at the moment, he's in a lab by himself or in his office all day so he didn't go.

Relief today, the Verwaltung said we could take our notice back and stay on here until the other place is ready. Thank goodness because we looked at another flat today, advertised as a 4 room flat but it was tiny and infact was only 3 rooms with the living area counting as 2 because there was an arch way to the dining area. I resign from flat hunting and will now be sitting it out in this tiny place until March 2010.

hupa · 25/11/2009 11:24

admylin - Well done for finally getting the flat sorted, you must be so relieved. Hopefully the next few months will fly by.

Dh is the only one here who has had the vaccination. I´m definitely not having it and we´re still arguing discussing whether the dc will be getting vaccinated.

admylin · 25/11/2009 11:31

The most recent thing we had back from school was a reviewed letter about swine flu safety.

They said that it will not be neccesary to close the school and no one should even think of wearing face masks or bother with doctors letters when returning to school after having flu. Everyone should use common sense about hygiene ie cough into your sleeve not your hand, wash hands often and stay home if you have a temperature. Sounded as if they were not in the least bit worried.

Dd'S class has paper towels and anti-bac hand wash at the sink in the classroom and they are meant to all wash hands a few times a day but she says no one bothers.

ErnestTheBavarian · 25/11/2009 12:00

Hi everyone,
sorry not been about, was away and always takes me forever to get back into swing of things. Must make mental not never to go away. We had a surprisingly good holiday in UK - tbh had low expectationsl.

Spent 2 days in Lakes district - had been heavy rain and lots of roads were flooded - water as high as wheel arches. Kids thought it was great, until I made the mistake of panicking we'd break down, then they were also rather alarmed. Now seen news, wow. How terrible for the people who live there. You'd be terrified every time it rained!

Was also good going to north east - made me happy about ds3 name again (have got a lot of stick about it).

Had bit of trouble with kids atm, all 4 of them 1 way or another in last week or 2, and dh under huge amount of pressure at work, so not been very chatty, but feel ok. Fab sunny day, but dd asleep, so just looking at it through the window, sigh, what a waste.

Hope everyone ok, no time to read, trying to sort out dc, pus Christmas (dh going to UK on Saturday, so ordering stuff for him to bring back. He'll lynch me when he finds out )

ZZZenAgain · 25/11/2009 12:03

missed you ernest but wow that makes kind of frantic reading, can feel your stress in it!

What's the problem with ds3's name? People in Germany cannot pronounce it or what?

admylin · 25/11/2009 13:00

Hi ernest, welcome back, was worried about you having a soggy wet and miserable holiday after hearing about the bad weather but sounds like you enjoyed it!

admylin · 25/11/2009 18:53

Arghhh...maths makes my brain hurt.

ErnestTheBavarian · 26/11/2009 07:35

must learn my times tables . I can do 'em all fine except 7 x 8 & a couple of others but I loose confidence All others I can do fine but I somehow get a mental block on the times tables thatcome out in the 50's?

What's your maths prob Ad? Thanks God my dc are good at moths, so a. they get 1's no prob and b. they don't ask for help (yet, gulp)

admylin · 26/11/2009 08:00

It was when ds was doing his homework last night, they are doing percentages.

I have 3 different maths books with step by step instructions on how to do percentages but ds insisted - no, they aren't the method his teacher said to use so he can't even consider them but he didn't 'get it' in class.

And did I mention that I HATE maths?

admylin · 26/11/2009 08:02

Dd just did binary notation and I didn't remember that at all but my 3 books helped me and she is an expert in it now, I was so proud of myself too that I had actually understood it!

ErnestTheBavarian · 26/11/2009 08:03

% ! yikes.

admylin · 26/11/2009 08:06

Well, I can do them now but ds still isn't sure. Thank goodness the woman on these videos explains some stuff really well

canella · 26/11/2009 11:23

hello!! been mad busy trying to be anally retentively organised for xmas now i'm a SAHM so not been mumsnetting so much! Got the whole of DH's family coming for 3 days over xmas - we never really bought each other gifts when we were in the UK unless they were with us but now the pressure is on!! no idea still what to buy BIL - he's really well off, has no kids so a big disposable income!! he needs nothing! any ideas welcome!

Admylin - i used to be really good at maths at school but that was nearly 20 years ago so wonder how i'll get on when dd is on to the complicated stuff!!

Ernest - hope today is better - read your other thread but i've no great words of wisdom - hope he's getting some help!

admylin · 27/11/2009 07:59

Wow, canella that could be hard work at your place at Christmas or are they all easy going? Are you doing English or German style Christmas regarding food and opening of presents? I suggested to my 2 dc that they could have their presents on Christmas eve like all their friends but they didn't like the idea!

Nice to know you were good at maths in school, I hated it and just scraped through then promptly forgot everything (especially all the pointless stuff like algebra)

Anyway, a taste of year 6 percentage maths: There were 57 187 million German tourist last year who went abroad. 6317 million went to Italy, work out the percent. Then work out 4100 million who went to France.

All without a calculator!

ErnestTheBavarian · 27/11/2009 08:10

thud
shame
horror

admylin · 27/11/2009 09:12

Ernest, when you got your ds the doctors appointment (saw on other thread) can you tell me what you said?

I've got to get one for dd but I don't want to start telling the secretary her life story. Just tried to get an appointment for this afternoon and the woman says bring her now but she's in school, then she said then go to the emergancy childrens hospital if you can't get here now. I said that's not an emergancy though so can you give me an appointment for Monday afternoon and she said well if you take it seriously and want your dd to be seen then go and take her from school now and bring her.

I was abit shocked at her reaction really and it makes the whole thing seem so serious and I didn't want to go into more detail so I just said I'll see what I can do and put the phone down with no appointment.

canella · 27/11/2009 10:07

admylin - thats big maths!!! managed to work out on paper that it was 9.something percent go to italybut no idea what the something is!! and thats only in year 6!! wow - doubt the kids in the equivalent year in the UK are doing that level of Maths!

xmas may well be hard work - had a barney with ILs a couple of weekends ago - just got fed up with the direct speaking thing they do (and many germans do!). MIL was critiscing the way i deal with ds2 (who is a monkey but i am scary strict with him!) and she just kept on at me till i burst into tears!! then i shouted at her and she took the huff!!!!! she thinks she should be allowed to say what she likes even if it upsets me!! she cant understand that its not a british way of speaking!! so xmas will either be a nightmare or she'll have learned her lesson and stop witht e critiscing! (ps i have no idea how to spell that word - not so good at english!!!!)
