Living overseas

Whether you're considering emigrating or an expat abroad, you'll find likeminds on this forum.

Two silly things I have been musing about.

DH and I are British and currently live in Aus. Tentatively TTC...

So, firstly, presumably if we have a child, when he goes to school, he will have an Australian accent? Does it seem bizarre to have a child speaking differently to the parents, or do they end up with a hybrid of Oz and Brit speak?

Secondly, if you have had a baby abroad, and want it christened, did you just go ahead and do it without all your friends and family around? We have gathered some friends here, but nothing like the big family and group of friends we have in the UK.

Presumably you can't get your child christened in a totally different country just so your friends are there, but it just seems slightly sad to have a little christening with all these new people we have only met in the last couple of years.

I know in the grand scheme of things these are unimportant but I mentioned them to Dh and he said that as I wansn't even pregnant yet there was plenty of time to consider this in the future. But I want to know now.

The more I think about it, the more I think a Christening in the Uk with all our friends and family around would be nice. A good way to catch up with everyone at once as well.

I do know how much I am jumping the gun here. I'm not even pregnant yet!

my kids have got a different accent to me, tho not local one either, as we're in Germany. You don't really notice I don't think as they evolve in font of your eyes and ears, it's not like meeting someone and it's marked iyswim.

wrt Christenings,
ds1 in london before we moved
ds2 flew back to UK for Christening with family
ds3 flew back to UK for Christening with family
dd1 had Christening here tho my mum did come over, tho tbh wish she hadn't.

Each felt right at the time

YOu can do it either way you want to at the time. Don't forget you've got rather a long flight, so day dream away, but don't make any firm plans, not even when pg, but much closer to the time, you really really don't know how you'll feel

good luck ttc

No, that's true.

I guess Ozziebaby will have to get used to the long flight though. It's not something I look forward to, although from my experience doing the flight, it's eventual Ozzietoddler who will be the real troublemaker.

Did you get my text, brighty? Any day except Friday, as I have a JOB INTERVIEW! Woo hoo!

Deffo not a fanny pack in Australia, surely? I thought that was a pure Americanism.

I think you just have to celebrate life's events where you land, and not get too hung up about having everyone who is significant to you there.
